The HSM Cowboy Action 38-40 Win 180 Grain Round Nose Flat Point Pistol Ammunition promises to deliver authentic performance for the cowboy action shooting enthusiast. Manufactured by HSM Ammunition, this round is specifically designed to evoke the spirit of the Old West. With a 180-grain Round Nose Flat Point (RNFP) bullet, a brass casing, and a muzzle velocity of 930 ft/s, it aims to replicate the classic performance of the .38-40 Winchester cartridge.
As a dedicated fan of cowboy action shooting and a long-time user of antique firearms, I was seeking ammunition that mirrored the characteristics of the original loads. Many modern cartridges, even those marketed for cowboy action, often lack the authentic feel and performance of the older rounds. I wanted something that would cycle reliably in my vintage Winchester 1873 and offer the appropriate level of recoil for a true cowboy experience.
Upon receiving the ammunition, I was immediately impressed by the packaging. The rounds were neatly arranged and the brass casings looked clean and well-polished. Picking up a round, it felt substantial and properly weighted, giving me confidence in its potential performance.
I considered other brands, including Black Hills Ammunition and Winchester’s own cowboy loads. Ultimately, the HSM offering stood out due to its combination of bullet weight, advertised velocity, and the reputation of HSM for producing quality, hand-crafted ammunition. The 34% Off discount was also a compelling factor, making it an attractive option for bulk purchasing.
My initial excitement was high. The promise of accurate, reliable, and historically appropriate ammunition for my classic firearms was very appealing. I couldn’t wait to get to the range and experience the HSM Cowboy Action 38-40 Win 180 Grain Round Nose Flat Point Pistol Ammunition firsthand.

First Use Experience
I tested the HSM Cowboy Action 38-40 Win Ammunition at my local shooting range, primarily using my Winchester 1873 rifle and a Colt Single Action Army revolver. The weather was clear and sunny, with a slight breeze – ideal conditions for outdoor shooting. I focused on accuracy at 25 and 50 yards, as well as reliability in cycling through both firearms.
The ammunition performed well in both guns, with no failures to feed or eject. The recoil was manageable and felt appropriate for the cartridge, providing a satisfying “thump” without being overly aggressive. However, I noticed a slightly more pronounced muzzle flash compared to some other cowboy action loads I’ve used.
After the first box of 50 rounds, I was impressed with the consistency. The rounds felt uniform, and there were no noticeable squib loads or duds. My only initial concern was the slight muzzle flash, which I planned to monitor during subsequent range sessions.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the HSM Cowboy Action Ammunition continues to perform reliably. I’ve put approximately 500 rounds through my firearms, and the ammunition has held up exceptionally well. There have been no malfunctions directly attributable to the ammunition itself.
Regarding durability, the brass casings appear to be of high quality and show no signs of premature wear or splitting. Cleaning the firearms after each session was straightforward, and I did not observe excessive fouling compared to other lead-bulleted ammunition.
Compared to my previous experiences with other brands, the HSM ammunition has proven to be more consistent in terms of accuracy and recoil. While some other brands offered similar performance, the HSM consistently delivers a more refined and reliable shooting experience. This makes it a top contender for my go-to cowboy action load.
