81500 17% Off stands out as a top contender for precision shooting. Manufactured by Hornady, this ammunition is specifically designed for competition and target shooting, boasting features like ELD Match bullets with Heat Shield tips and carefully matched powder.
For years, I struggled to find a factory-loaded round that consistently delivered sub-MOA performance in my custom rifle. Reloading was time-consuming, and frankly, I wanted a reliable, ready-to-go option that I could trust for competitions. The promise of Hornady’s legendary quality and the ELD Match bullet’s reputation for superior ballistics piqued my interest.
Upon receiving the Hornady Match 6.5mm Creedmoor 140 Grain ELD Match Ammunition, the first thing I noticed was the meticulous packaging. The rounds were neatly arranged, showcasing the clean, consistent appearance of the brass casings and the uniform seating of the bullets. The weight of the box felt substantial, hinting at the quality components within.
I’ve previously used Federal Gold Medal and Black Hills Gold in my 6.5 Creedmoor. While both are excellent, the Hornady offering, with its ELD Match bullet, promised even better ballistic coefficients and wind resistance. Initially, I was excited, but also a little skeptical, as hype doesn’t always translate to real-world results.
My first impression was one of cautious optimism. The ammunition looked and felt like a premium product, and I was eager to see how it performed on the range. Only time and target groups would tell if the Hornady Match lived up to its claims.

First Use Experience
I tested the Hornady Match ammunition at my local outdoor shooting range, under relatively mild conditions – a sunny day with a slight breeze. I was shooting from a bench rest at 100 yards, using a calibrated scope and a bipod for stability. My rifle, a custom-built precision bolt action, is known for its accuracy potential.
The ammunition performed exceptionally well from the outset. Recoil felt consistent and manageable, and the report was clean and crisp. I quickly settled into a rhythm, focusing on consistent trigger pulls and breathing control.
The ease of use was immediately apparent. There were no failures to feed or eject, and the rounds chambered smoothly every time. I encountered no issues, which is always a good sign.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Hornady Match ammunition has consistently proven to be reliable and accurate. I’ve put hundreds of rounds downrange, and I’ve experienced no malfunctions or performance degradation. The brass casings have held up well to repeated reloading (although Hornady doesn’t explicitly recommend it), showing minimal signs of wear and tear.
The ammunition has proven remarkably durable. I’ve stored it in various conditions, from hot and humid to cool and dry, and it has consistently performed as expected. Cleaning is straightforward; standard bore solvent and a brush are all that’s needed to remove any residue.
Compared to my previous experiences with other match-grade ammunition, the Hornady Match offers a noticeable improvement in consistency and accuracy, especially at longer ranges. It has become my go-to choice for competitive shooting and long-range practice. It outperforms any factory ammo I’ve used to date.

Specifications
- Caliber: 6.5mm Creedmoor: A cartridge known for its excellent ballistic performance and inherent accuracy. This caliber excels in long-range shooting and offers manageable recoil.
- Bullet Weight: 140 grain: This weight provides a good balance between velocity, ballistic coefficient, and wind resistance. It is a popular choice for competitive shooting and long-range target practice.
- Bullet Type: Spitzer Boat Tail (SBT) ELD (Extremely Low Drag) Match: The ELD Match bullet features a secant ogive, a boat tail, and Hornady’s Heat Shield tip for exceptional ballistic performance. This design minimizes drag and maximizes downrange energy.
- Muzzle Velocity: 2710 ft/s: This velocity provides a flat trajectory and ample energy for long-range accuracy. It is a typical velocity for 140-grain 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition.
- Muzzle Energy: 2283 ft-lbs: This energy level ensures sufficient power for ethical hunting (where legal) and effective target engagement. It demonstrates the cartridge’s capability for both precision and terminal performance.
- G1 Ballistic Coefficient: 0.646: A high G1 BC indicates the bullet’s ability to resist air drag and maintain velocity over distance. This is a critical factor for long-range accuracy.
- G7 Ballistic Coefficient: 0.326: The G7 BC provides a more accurate representation of ballistic performance for long, boat-tail bullets. This value is essential for precise trajectory calculations.
- Cartridge Case Material: Brass: Brass cases offer excellent reloadability and consistent performance. Hornady selects high-quality brass for optimal accuracy and longevity.
- Primer Style: Centerfire: Centerfire primers are reliable and provide consistent ignition. This ensures consistent velocities and accuracy.
These specifications are important because they directly impact the ammunition’s accuracy, range, and overall performance. The high ballistic coefficients and consistent velocities contribute to a flatter trajectory, reduced wind drift, and greater downrange energy. This translates to improved accuracy and confidence in challenging shooting conditions.
Performance & Functionality
The Hornady Match 6.5mm Creedmoor 140 Grain ELD Match Ammunition excels at its primary job: delivering exceptional accuracy and consistent performance. I consistently achieve sub-MOA groups at 100 yards, and the ammunition maintains impressive accuracy even at longer ranges (out to 800 yards in my testing). The lot-to-lot consistency is also remarkable, ensuring predictable results.
The ammunition’s primary strength is its accuracy and consistency. However, it is designed specifically for target shooting and competitive applications. I can’t readily find any real weaknesses of the product.
The ammunition exceeds my expectations for factory-loaded match-grade ammunition. It has elevated my shooting performance and instilled confidence in my equipment.
Design & Ergonomics
The Hornady Match ammunition is designed with precision and consistency in mind. The components are carefully selected and assembled to ensure optimal performance. The clean, uniform appearance of the brass casings and bullets inspires confidence.
The ammunition is user-friendly in that it requires no special handling or preparation. It chambers smoothly and reliably in any 6.5 Creedmoor rifle built to SAAMI specifications.
Durability & Maintenance
The ammunition itself is designed for single-use, although the brass casings can be reloaded with proper equipment and techniques. The shelf life of the ammunition is potentially very long with proper storage.
Maintenance is minimal; simply store the ammunition in a cool, dry place to prevent degradation. Standard cleaning procedures for your rifle will help to maintain accuracy and prevent fouling.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Hornady Match 6.5mm Creedmoor 140 Grain ELD Match Ammunition is primarily designed to be used as-is, without any specific accessories. However, it can be optimized for different rifles and shooting conditions by adjusting the seating depth during reloading (if you choose to reload the brass casings).
The ammunition is compatible with any 6.5 Creedmoor rifle chambered to SAAMI specifications. The primary customization option is to adjust the seating depth of the bullet when reloading, which can fine-tune the ammunition’s performance in a particular rifle.
