The Hornady Dangerous Game .416 Remington Magnum 400 Grain Dangerous Game eXpanding Bonded Centerfire Rifle Ammunition is purpose-built for one thing: stopping the biggest, toughest, and most dangerous game on the planet. Hornady has a long and respected history in the ammunition world, and their Dangerous Game series is a testament to their commitment to quality and performance. These rounds are designed to deliver devastating stopping power with controlled expansion and deep penetration.
My need for this ammunition stemmed from a planned hunt in Namibia, pursuing plains game but with the ever-present possibility of encountering dangerous animals like Cape Buffalo or even a rogue lion. I needed a cartridge that I could trust my life to. I wanted something that could handle thick hide, heavy bone, and deliver a decisive blow.
Upon receiving the ammunition, the first thing that struck me was the weight of each cartridge; it felt substantial, promising significant kinetic energy. The cartridges were meticulously assembled, with no visible imperfections or inconsistencies in the crimp or bullet seating depth. The copper jacket of the DGX bullet gleamed, hinting at the controlled expansion it was designed for.
I considered other options, including Barnes TSX and Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, but ultimately chose the Hornady DGX for its reputation for consistent expansion and penetration at a slightly more manageable price point. I felt confident that the Hornady ammunition would give me the edge I needed in a potentially life-threatening situation. My initial impression was excitement mixed with a healthy dose of respect for the power I was now holding.

First Use Experience
I tested the Hornady Dangerous Game .416 Remington Magnum 400 Grain Dangerous Game eXpanding Bonded Centerfire Rifle Ammunition at a private shooting range designed for long-range and large-bore rifles. The range allowed me to simulate the conditions I expected to encounter in Africa, with distances ranging from 50 to 200 yards. The weather was dry and sunny, typical of the arid conditions where this ammunition would be used.
The recoil was significant, as expected from a .416 Remington Magnum, but manageable in my custom-built rifle with a muzzle brake and quality recoil pad. The ammunition performed flawlessly, with consistent velocities and no failures to feed or eject. There were no issues or surprises, and the rounds grouped tightly at 100 yards, confirming the accuracy Hornady is known for.
Extended Use & Reliability
After firing approximately 60 rounds over several range sessions, the ammunition continued to perform reliably and consistently. There were no signs of degradation in performance, and the brass cases extracted cleanly each time. The ammunition proved to be easy to store and transport, with the sturdy box protecting the cartridges from damage.
There were no noticeable signs of wear and tear on the cartridges themselves, even after being subjected to varying temperatures. Maintenance was minimal, requiring only occasional wiping down of the cartridges to remove dust or debris. Compared to my previous experience with other premium dangerous game ammunition, the Hornady DGX consistently delivered excellent accuracy and reliable expansion.
