First Impressions of Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack
The Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack promises to bring realistic detail and packable convenience to the duck hunter’s decoy spread. Offered by Higdon Outdoors, a well-known name in waterfowl hunting, this six-pack aims to accurately mimic the unique appearance of Northern Shovelers, known for their distinctive bills and tendency to frequent shallow waters. With a blend of drake and hen postures and the official endorsement of Ducks Unlimited, the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack definitely piqued my interest.
I was on the hunt for some lightweight, durable, and realistic shoveler decoys to supplement my existing spread in shallow flooded timber. My current spread lacked the visual pop needed to attract wary birds on overcast days. I was hoping the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack would deliver that needed contrast and realism, especially with the bright white coloration advertised.
Upon unboxing, the decoys felt surprisingly lightweight, a crucial factor for someone who often hikes a considerable distance to reach their hunting spot. The plastic seemed durable enough to withstand some abuse, and the paint job, while not perfect, was indeed vibrant, particularly the drakes’ orange and white markings. Compared to some of my older, heavier decoys, the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack felt like a significant upgrade in terms of portability.
I was initially considering another brand known for hyper-realistic paint jobs, but the price point of the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack was significantly more attractive. Another contender was a set of inflatable decoys, but I worried about their durability in colder weather and potential for puncture. Ultimately, the combination of realistic features, manageable weight, and reasonable price swayed me toward the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack.
My initial impression was cautiously optimistic. While not the most intricately detailed decoys I’ve seen, the vibrant colors and lightweight design seemed promising. I was eager to see how they would perform in a real hunting situation.
Real-World Testing: Putting Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack to the Test
First Use Experience
My first hunt with the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack was on a chilly morning in late December in a shallow, flooded cypress swamp. The water was barely knee-deep in most places, perfect shoveler habitat.
Setting up the decoys was quick and easy thanks to the self-righting weighted keels. The keel clips also proved useful for keeping the decoys from drifting too far in the slight current. After scattering the drakes and hens amongst my mallard decoys, I settled into my blind and waited. The wind picked up, creating some chop on the water, but the decoys remained upright and presented well.
Surprisingly, the first flock that approached circled the decoys several times before committing, something they rarely did with my existing spread. I harvested two drakes from that group, a testament, I believe, to the improved realism offered by the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack.
Extended Use & Reliability
After a full waterfowl season of use, the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack has held up remarkably well. There are some minor scratches and scuffs on the paint, especially around the keels, but nothing that significantly detracts from their appearance.
Cleaning the decoys is a breeze; a simple rinse with water removes most mud and debris. I store them in a mesh decoy bag to allow for proper ventilation and prevent mold growth. Compared to my old flocked decoys, which required meticulous cleaning, the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack is refreshingly low-maintenance.
While not indestructible, the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack has exceeded my expectations in terms of durability. They have certainly outperformed some of the cheaper decoys I’ve used in the past, which often cracked or faded after only a few hunts. The improved realism, ease of use, and surprising durability make the Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack a solid addition to any waterfowl hunter’s arsenal.

Performance & Functionality

Durability & Maintenance

The Higdon Outdoors Standard Shoveler Pack does not come with any additional accessories beyond the decoys themselves. There are no specific customization options offered directly by Higdon Outdoors.
