First Thoughts on the Higdon Outdoors Hard Body Upright Hen Turkey Hen Species Multi Color
The Higdon Outdoors Hard Body Upright Hen Turkey Hen Species Multi Color decoy promises to be a lifelike addition to any turkey hunter’s arsenal. This isn’t just another plastic hen; it’s designed with realistic posture and subtle motion to lure in even the wariest gobblers. Higdon Outdoors aims for realism, and after years of using cheap, easily spooked decoys, I’m eager to see if this one lives up to the hype.
I was tired of hunts being ruined by wary toms that seemed to spot my decoys as artificial from a mile away. I needed something that blended seamlessly with the environment, something that wouldn’t give me away with unnatural movements or a plastic sheen. The promise of increased visibility due to the upright posture and natural movement was a significant draw.
Upon unboxing, the first thing that struck me was the robust feel of the decoy. It’s definitely a “hard body,” as the name suggests, constructed from what feels like a very durable plastic. The multi-color paint job is surprisingly detailed, mimicking the subtle variations in a real hen’s plumage. My initial reaction was positive – this seemed like a significant step up in quality from the collapsible, rubbery decoys I’ve used in the past.
Compared to the Flambeau Outdoors Master Series Turkey Decoy Hen, which I found overly shiny and lightweight, the Higdon Outdoors decoy feels more substantial and realistic. Similarly, the Primos She Mobile Turkey Decoy, while offering movement, felt flimsy and prone to damage. The Higdon Outdoors Hard Body Upright Hen Turkey Hen Species Multi Color seems to strike a better balance between durability, realism, and practical features.
I was cautiously optimistic. The build quality and attention to detail were impressive, but the real test would be how it performed in the field. Would it truly fool a seasoned gobbler, or would it end up being just another piece of gear gathering dust in my garage?
Real-World Testing: Putting Higdon Outdoors Hard Body Upright Hen Turkey Hen Species Multi Color to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Higdon Outdoors Hard Body Upright Hen Turkey Hen Species Multi Color on a spring turkey hunt in the dense hardwood forests of western Pennsylvania. The weather was typical for early spring: cool, damp, and occasionally drizzly. I set the decoy up in a small clearing near a well-worn game trail, positioning it about 20 yards from my blind.
The universal stake motion system was immediately noticeable. Even in the slightest breeze, the decoy exhibited subtle, realistic movement, giving it a lifelike appearance. I was impressed with how naturally it swayed and shifted, mimicking the behavior of a real hen foraging for food.
The only initial issue I encountered was with the stake itself. While functional, it felt a bit short for the uneven terrain, requiring me to find a particularly flat spot to ensure the decoy stood upright. This wasn’t a major problem, but a slightly longer stake would have provided more versatility.
Extended Use & Reliability
After using the Higdon Outdoors Hard Body Upright Hen Turkey Hen Species Multi Color for an entire turkey season and multiple scouting trips, I can attest to its durability. The hard body construction has held up remarkably well, showing no signs of cracking or deformation despite being subjected to various weather conditions and rough handling. The paint has remained surprisingly vibrant, with only minor scratches in a few high-wear areas.
Cleaning the decoy is a breeze. A quick wipe down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove mud, dirt, or other debris. I haven’t needed to use any specialized cleaning products, which is a definite plus.
Compared to my previous experiences with cheaper decoys that often faded, cracked, or simply fell apart after a season or two, the Higdon Outdoors Hard Body Upright Hen Turkey Hen Species Multi Color has far exceeded my expectations. It truly feels like an investment that will last for years to come.
