First Impressions of Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait
The Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait promises a modern spin on the classic stick bait, a staple for bass anglers. Designed by the Googan Squad themselves, the Lunker Log aims to be a versatile weapon in any angler’s tackle box, effective whether the bite is hot or slow.
For years, I’ve relied on the original stick baits, but I was searching for something with a little extra oomph to trigger strikes from pressured fish. I wanted a bait that combined the proven action of a stick bait with some added features that would make it stand out.
Upon unboxing the Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait, I immediately noticed the quality of the plastic and the subtle design features. The integrated lateral lines and salt infusion hinted at a bait designed for both visual and taste-based attraction.
Compared to the original Yamamoto Senko, the Lunker Log felt slightly denser and more durable. Other similar baits like the Strike King Ocho lack the distinct lateral lines that Googan Squad integrated, making the Lunker Log more appealing.
My initial impression was one of cautious optimism. I was excited to see if the Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait could live up to the hype and become a go-to bait in my arsenal.
Real-World Testing: Putting Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait on a local lake known for its clear water and finicky bass. I rigged it wacky style with a Green Series Lunker Weedless Wacky Hook, as suggested, and cast it around submerged vegetation and docks.
The bait performed admirably in the clear conditions, exhibiting a subtle shimmy on the fall that immediately drew attention. I had a few strikes within the first hour, landing two decent largemouth bass.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait has proven its worth. The plastic is surprisingly durable, holding up well to multiple fish catches and resisting tearing even when rigged weedless.
Maintenance is a breeze; simply rinse the baits with fresh water after use and store them in a sealed bag to prevent them from drying out. The Lunker Log outperformed my previous favorite stick baits in terms of durability and strike-inducing action, especially when the bite was tough.
Breaking Down the Features of Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait
Specifications
The Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait boasts several noteworthy specifications:
- Manufacturer: Googan Squad
- Lure Type: Creature Bait
- Hook Type: Weedless
- Features: Lateral Lines, Subtle Shimmy Action, Salt Injected
The lateral lines integrated into the body create additional vibration and visual appeal, mimicking the natural movements of prey. The subtle shimmy action on the fall entices strikes from even the most cautious bass, triggering their predatory instincts.
The salt injection adds weight for increased casting distance and provides a taste that keeps fish holding on longer. This allows for better hooksets and prevents short strikes.
Performance & Functionality
The Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait excels at its primary job: catching bass. The bait is incredibly versatile, allowing for various rigging options, from wacky to Texas rigged.
It performs exceptionally well in both clear and stained water, thanks to its combination of visual and sensory appeal. The only area for improvement might be in extremely heavy cover, where a slightly bulkier bait could be more effective at pulling fish out.
Design & Ergonomics
The Lunker Log’s design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The plastic is soft yet durable, providing a realistic feel and enticing action.
Its weight is perfectly balanced, allowing for easy casting and controlled presentations. The subtle contours and lateral lines add to its lifelike appearance.
Durability & Maintenance
The Googan Squad Lunker Log Soft Bait is surprisingly durable for a soft plastic bait. With proper care, each bait can withstand multiple fishing trips and catches.
Maintenance is minimal; just rinse and store properly. The salt infusion might cause slight discoloration over time, but it doesn’t affect performance.
Accessories and Customization Options
While the Lunker Log doesn’t require any specific accessories, using high-quality hooks is recommended. The Green Series Lunker Weedless Wacky Hook is an excellent choice for wacky rigging, while a 3/0 or 4/0 EWG hook works well for Texas rigging.
The bait is compatible with various scent attractants to further enhance its appeal. Anglers can also customize the color by dipping the tail in contrasting colors for added visibility.
