Galco VHS – Vertical Holster System 4.0, Tan, VHS4 – 1 out of 5 models Review

Let’s Dive into Galco VHS – Vertical Holster System 4.0, Tan, VHS4 – 1 out of 5 models

The Galco VHS – Vertical Holster System 4.0, Tan, VHS4 – 1 out of 5 models is more than just a holster; it’s a legacy. Galco has a rich history of providing quality holsters, and this system builds upon the venerable VHS line, trusted by military and law enforcement professionals worldwide.

I was looking for a comfortable and concealable carry option that distributed weight evenly across my shoulders, especially when carrying a full-sized firearm and spare magazines for extended periods. The Galco VHS 4.0 promised just that. My initial impression upon unboxing was that of quality and ruggedness; the premium steerhide construction felt substantial and well-crafted.

Compared to the horizontal carry shoulder holsters I’ve used in the past, like the Miami Classic (also from Galco), the vertical orientation appealed to me due to its potentially better concealment under a jacket. Other options I considered were similar vertical rigs from other manufacturers, but Galco’s reputation for durability and the improvements in the 4.0 version, particularly the harness redesign, swayed my decision. I was excited to see if the VHS 4.0 lived up to its reputation and provided a comfortable, reliable, and concealable carry solution for my needs.

Real-World Testing: Putting Galco VHS – Vertical Holster System 4.0, Tan, VHS4 – 1 out of 5 models to the Test

First Use Experience

I first tested the Galco VHS 4.0 at my local shooting range during a practice session, focused on drawing and firing drills. I wanted to assess its comfort, draw speed, and how well it concealed under a light jacket. The range was relatively dry and mild, presenting ideal conditions for an initial evaluation.

The draw felt natural after a few practice runs, and the vertical orientation kept the firearm tucked close to my body. I did notice a slight learning curve in adjusting the harness for optimal comfort, but once dialed in, the weight distribution was significantly better than my belt holsters. There were no immediate issues, but I needed more extended use to assess its long-term comfort and durability.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of use, including all-day wear during training courses and weekend hikes, the Galco VHS 4.0 has proven to be a reliable and comfortable carry option. The steerhide leather has held up well with minimal signs of wear, even after exposure to light rain and dusty conditions. Cleaning and maintenance are straightforward, requiring only occasional leather conditioning to keep it supple.

Compared to my previous shoulder holsters, the Galco VHS 4.0 definitely outperforms them in terms of weight distribution and overall comfort. The improved harness design and Flexalon backplate make a noticeable difference, preventing the system from digging into my shoulders or causing discomfort, even during extended periods of activity. I find this superior comfort a major selling point.
