Franklin Armory F17-X 16″ .17 WSM Complete Upper Receiver Review

First Thoughts on the Franklin Armory F17-X 16″ .17 WSM Complete Upper Receiver

The Franklin Armory F17-X 16″ .17 WSM Complete Upper Receiver promises to be a game-changer for AR platform enthusiasts seeking a high-velocity, flat-shooting solution for varmint control and target shooting. Franklin Armory has built a reputation for innovation, and this upper receiver, chambered in the potent .17 Winchester Super Magnum, aims to deliver. The new Osprey Defense slim piston system and threaded barrel for suppressor compatibility immediately caught my attention.

My search for a dedicated AR upper for precision varmint hunting led me to this product. I needed something more accurate and with a flatter trajectory than my existing .223 setup, without the recoil of larger calibers. This seemed to perfectly fit the bill.

Out of the box, the Franklin Armory F17-X 16″ .17 WSM Complete Upper Receiver feels solid and well-constructed. The black finish is even and durable, and the handguard feels comfortable and secure. The integrated barrier stop is a thoughtful touch.

I considered the Alexander Arms .17 HMR upper and the CMMG .22LR conversion kit before ultimately settling on the Franklin Armory F17-X. The .17 WSM promised higher velocities and flatter trajectory than the .17 HMR, while the dedicated upper should offer better reliability and accuracy than a .22LR conversion kit.

My initial impression was excitement tempered with a touch of skepticism. The .17 WSM has always intrigued me, but reliability issues in semi-automatic platforms have been a concern. Hopefully, this Franklin Armory offering is the solution I’ve been waiting for.

Real-World Testing: Putting Franklin Armory F17-X 16″ .17 WSM Complete Upper Receiver to the Test

First Use Experience

My first range session with the Franklin Armory F17-X 16″ .17 WSM Complete Upper Receiver took place at an outdoor range in relatively mild conditions (70 degrees Fahrenheit, slight breeze). I mounted it on a mil-spec lower receiver that I’ve used extensively with various AR-15 uppers. It was easy to install, with no issues.

The upper performed admirably. Recoil was minimal, and the muzzle report was surprisingly mild for a .17 WSM. The action cycled smoothly, and I experienced no malfunctions within the first 100 rounds using CCI A17 ammunition.

The only adjustment I needed was familiarizing myself with the trigger pull on my lower receiver, as the upper receiver itself was drop-in ready. I was also impressed that the new piston system automatically adjusts for suppressed or unsuppressed use, as claimed.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of regular use, the Franklin Armory F17-X 16″ .17 WSM Complete Upper Receiver continues to impress. I’ve put approximately 500 rounds through it, and it has remained remarkably reliable. I even shot it on a very dusty day, and there was no degradation to performance.

Durability has been excellent. The finish shows no signs of wear, and all components remain tight and secure. The bore cleans easily, and the piston system is simple to disassemble and maintain.

Compared to my previous .223 upper, the F17-X offers significantly reduced recoil and a flatter trajectory out to 200 yards. It has exceeded my expectations as a dedicated varminting upper.
