First Impressions of Fobos Knives Alaris Fixed Blade Black/Grn FOB037
The Fobos Knives Alaris Fixed Blade Black/Grn FOB037 immediately strikes you as a serious tool, not just another pretty knife. Designed by Fobos Knives, this fixed blade promises a blend of robust durability and practical design, intended for those who demand peak performance from their gear.
I’ve spent years searching for the ideal fixed blade knife, one that could bridge the gap between everyday carry and a dependable tool for wilderness survival. I was looking for a knife with high-end steel, a comfortable grip for extended use, and a reliable sheath system.
The unboxing experience confirmed my initial expectations: a hefty but balanced feel, the reassuring grip of micarta, and the sleek black PVD coated CPM-3V steel. The green liners add just a touch of visual flair to an otherwise serious tool.
Compared to my Benchmade Bushcrafter 162 and my ESEE 6, the Alaris seemed to occupy a sweet spot between the two. The Benchmade is a fantastic all-rounder but the steel isn’t quite as tough as CPM-3V. The ESEE 6 is a rugged beast, but can feel bulky for finer tasks.
My first impression was overwhelmingly positive – this is a knife that inspires confidence. The Alaris seems to be built to withstand serious use, with a design that blends both aesthetics and functionality.
Real-World Testing: Putting Fobos Knives Alaris Fixed Blade Black/Grn FOB037 to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing ground for the Fobos Knives Alaris Fixed Blade Black/Grn FOB037 was a weekend camping trip in the Pennsylvania wilderness. The weather was variable, with periods of rain and damp conditions.
The Alaris excelled at various camp tasks: batoning firewood, preparing kindling, and even food preparation. The CPM-3V steel held its edge remarkably well, even after sustained use.
The micarta handle provided a secure and comfortable grip, even with wet hands. I found the knife intuitive to use, requiring minimal adjustment.
There were no immediate issues after my first outing, only a growing appreciation for the knife’s balanced feel and robust construction.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use, the Fobos Knives Alaris Fixed Blade Black/Grn FOB037 continues to impress. I have taken it on multiple backpacking trips, used it for yard work, and even kept it as a backup tool in my truck.
The CPM-3V steel shows minimal signs of wear, with only minor scratches on the black PVD coating. The micarta handle remains grippy and comfortable, showing no signs of chipping or cracking.
Cleaning is simple: a quick wipe down with a damp cloth, and a light coat of oil on the blade is all that’s needed. Compared to my previous experience with other carbon steel blades, the Alaris is noticeably more resistant to corrosion.
The Alaris has outperformed my expectations in terms of durability and reliability. It has become my go-to fixed blade for any situation where I need a dependable and versatile tool.
