The Fiocchi VIP 20 Gauge 7/8oz 2.75in 8 Shot Shotgun Ammunition XN20VIP8 promises competition-grade performance for the discerning shotgun shooter. Fiocchi claims these shells are built with the same quality components and strict tolerances used by Olympians and world champions. This ammunition aims to deliver consistent patterns and reliable performance, making it ideal for target shooting and sporting clays.
I’ve always strived for tighter groupings at the range, and the inconsistent performance of some budget ammunition was holding me back. I needed a load that would give me confidence in my shots, especially when practicing for sporting clays competitions.
Upon receiving the Fiocchi VIP 20 Gauge shells, the packaging immediately impressed me; it felt robust and professional. The shells themselves looked consistently manufactured, a stark contrast to some of the cheaper brands I’ve used.
Compared to Winchester AA and Remington Gun Club, the Fiocchi VIP shells seemed to have a slightly tighter crimp. This detail, along with the brand’s reputation, led me to believe these would offer superior consistency compared to the others, justifying the slightly higher price point.
My initial excitement was high; I couldn’t wait to see if these shells lived up to the hype and improved my scores. The promise of consistent patterns and reliable performance was exactly what I was looking for in 20 gauge ammunition.

First Use Experience
I tested the Fiocchi VIP 20 Gauge shells at my local shooting range, focusing on trap and skeet. The weather was mild, around 65 degrees Fahrenheit, with a slight breeze.
The shells cycled flawlessly through my Benelli Montefeltro and my Beretta A400 Xplor Action, with no noticeable difference in recoil compared to my standard loads. The report was crisp and consistent, and the clay targets seemed to shatter more decisively than with my usual practice ammunition.
The consistency surprised me; I didn’t experience any duds or misfires, which is always a concern with some cheaper brands. After the first round of trap, I noticed my scores were slightly higher, likely due to the tighter patterns.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of using the Fiocchi VIP 20 Gauge shells, I’ve put hundreds of rounds through my shotguns. They continue to perform reliably, with no signs of degradation in quality or consistency.
The shells have held up well, even when stored in my range bag during hotter days. I haven’t observed any bulging or other signs of heat damage that sometimes occur with less robust ammunition.
Cleaning my shotguns after using these shells is no different than with other brands, requiring the usual bore cleaner and lubrication. The minimal residue left behind suggests a clean-burning powder.
Compared to my previous experiences with budget ammunition, the Fiocchi VIP shells are significantly more consistent and reliable. They provide a noticeable improvement in pattern density and target breaks, giving me more confidence in my shooting.
