For years, I’ve pursued upland game across diverse terrains, always seeking that perfect balance of power, pattern, and reliability in my shotgun shells. The Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 28 Gauge 1 1/16oz 3in 5 Shot Shotgun Ammunition
283GP5 39% Off caught my eye with its promise of nickel-plated shot and a pattern optimized for larger birds, particularly pheasant and grouse. Fiocchi, a brand known for quality and consistency, further fueled my interest, especially given the attractive discount.
My old side-by-side needed a new partner in the field. I wanted something that could reach out a little further than standard loads, delivering tight patterns for those tricky shots on flushing birds. I had been using 20 gauge for a while, but yearned for the lighter, sweeter-handling 28.
Unboxing the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant, I was immediately impressed by the clean, consistent appearance of the shells. The hulls were neatly crimped, and the nickel-plated shot gleamed, hinting at the quality within. The box felt substantial, promising consistent performance.
I’ve used other 28-gauge loads, primarily from Winchester and Remington, but I found them lacking in either pattern density at longer ranges or terminal energy on larger birds like late-season roosters. I chose the Fiocchi because of the heavier 1 1/16oz load and the promise of nickel-plated shot for better penetration. This load promises to bridge the gap between lighter target loads and heavier hunting rounds.
My first impression was excitement tempered by cautious optimism. The shells looked fantastic, but the proof would be in the pattern board and, more importantly, in the field. A successful upland hunt relies heavily on the right ammunition, and I was eager to see if the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant would live up to the hype.

First Use Experience
My initial test of the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant was at a local shooting range, patterning the shells at 30 and 40 yards through my side-by-side with improved cylinder and modified chokes. The weather was clear and cool, ideal for a focused shooting session. The report was crisp, and recoil was manageable, even with the heavier load.
The patterns were impressively tight and consistent. At 30 yards, the shot distribution was even with minimal gaps, while at 40 yards, the pattern held together remarkably well, with enough density to reliably take down a pheasant. There were no signs of excessive leading or fouling in the barrels, a testament to the quality of the components.
Ease of use was a non-issue. The shells loaded smoothly and ejected cleanly from my shotgun. There were no malfunctions or failures to fire. The only surprise was how well the shells patterned through my improved cylinder choke, providing a wider, yet still effective, spread for closer shots.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of hunting in South Dakota’s pheasant country, the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant shells proved to be remarkably consistent and reliable. Despite encounters with rain, snow, and mud, the shells performed flawlessly. There were no signs of swelling, corrosion, or misfires.
The shells held up well, showing no signs of degradation despite being carried in my game bag for extended periods. Maintenance was minimal, requiring only a standard cleaning of my shotgun after each hunt. I’ve been consistently impressed by the consistent performance in varied conditions.
Compared to my previous experiences with lighter 28-gauge loads, the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant significantly outperformed them in terms of range and knock-down power. Birds that would have sailed on with lighter loads dropped cleanly with the Fiocchi, showcasing the benefit of the heavier shot charge and nickel plating. It delivers the reliability that pheasant hunters crave.
