The Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 12 Gauge 1-1/4oz 2.75in 4 Size Shotgun Ammunition promises a potent blend of power and performance for upland game hunters. Fiocchi is a name synonymous with quality ammunition, and the “Golden Pheasant” line is specifically tailored for achieving clean, ethical kills on tough birds. This ammunition boasts a 1-1/4oz payload of #4 shot, delivered at a blistering 1400 fps, designed to reach out and touch those long-flushing roosters.
My quest for the perfect pheasant load has been a long one. I needed a round that offered both sufficient knock-down power at longer ranges and a consistent pattern to ensure a humane shot. I’ve tried various brands and shot sizes over the years, always searching for that sweet spot between recoil, range, and pattern density.
Unboxing the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant, the first thing I noticed was the clean, consistent crimp and the overall quality feel of the shells. The vibrant gold lettering on the hull adds a touch of class, a subtle reminder of the premium performance promised within. Compared to some of the more budget-friendly options I’ve used, these shells just felt different, more refined.
I considered other premium pheasant loads from Federal and Winchester, but the Fiocchi offering, especially at the discounted price, seemed to offer the best balance of value and performance. The advertised velocity and shot weight were exactly what I was looking for to extend my effective range in the field.
My initial reaction was definitely excitement. If these shells performed as advertised, they could be the game-changer I needed to finally bag those elusive birds that always seem to flush just out of reach.

First Use Experience
My first field test of the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant ammunition took place on a crisp October morning in the rolling hills of South Dakota. I was hunting with my trusty 12-gauge over-under, known for its tight patterns. The conditions were ideal: clear skies, a slight breeze, and plenty of promising cover.
The Fiocchi shells cycled flawlessly through my gun. The recoil was noticeable but manageable, certainly not as punishing as some of the heavier 3-inch loads I’ve used. I immediately noticed the consistent report and felt confident in the power behind each shot.
My first pheasant of the day flushed wild, nearly 40 yards out. I swung, led the bird by what felt like a mile, and squeezed the trigger. The pheasant folded instantly, dropping cleanly to the ground. No cripples, no second shots needed. I was impressed.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of hunting with the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant ammunition, I can confidently say that it has consistently performed beyond my expectations. These shells are reliable and devastatingly effective on pheasants.
I’ve put approximately 100 rounds through my shotgun, and I have not experienced a single misfire or failure to eject. The hulls are durable and show minimal signs of wear, even after multiple handling and reloading attempts (for those who reload shotshells, these hulls are excellent candidates).
Compared to previous experiences with other brands, the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant stands out for its consistent patterns and clean kills. I’ve seen a noticeable reduction in the number of birds that require a follow-up shot, which speaks volumes about the ammunition’s knock-down power and pattern density. These quickly became my go-to upland load.

Specifications
The Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 12 Gauge 1-1/4oz 2.75in 4 Size Shotgun Ammunition boasts several key specifications that contribute to its impressive performance. It is a 12-gauge shell with a 2.75-inch shell length, making it compatible with most standard 12-gauge shotguns. The 1-1/4 oz shot weight provides a substantial payload for excellent stopping power.
The ammunition features #4 shot, a versatile size suitable for a variety of upland game birds, especially pheasant. The muzzle velocity of 1400 ft/s ensures that the shot maintains sufficient energy at longer ranges. The shot material is Bismuth, a non-toxic alternative to lead, making it compliant with regulations in areas where lead shot is restricted.
These specifications are important because they directly impact the ammunition’s range, pattern density, and terminal performance. The high velocity and heavy payload provide the necessary energy to penetrate feathers and deliver a lethal blow. The non-toxic Bismuth shot ensures ethical hunting practices and compliance with environmental regulations.
Performance & Functionality
The Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 12 Gauge ammunition excels in its primary function: ethically and effectively harvesting upland game birds. The patterns are consistently dense and uniform, providing excellent coverage at typical pheasant hunting ranges (30-45 yards).
The ammunition’s high velocity ensures that the shot arrives on target with sufficient energy to penetrate feathers and vital organs. The result is clean, quick kills, minimizing suffering for the bird and maximizing the hunter’s success rate.
One area where the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant could potentially be improved is in its felt recoil. While not excessive, the recoil is noticeable, especially during extended shooting sessions.
Design & Ergonomics
The Fiocchi Golden Pheasant ammunition is designed with functionality and reliability in mind. The plastic hull is durable and weather-resistant, ensuring consistent performance in a variety of hunting conditions.
The smooth crimp and consistent dimensions of the shells ensure reliable feeding and ejection in a variety of shotgun actions. The vibrant gold lettering on the hull is a nice aesthetic touch, adding a touch of class to the ammunition. There is virtually no learning curve.
Durability & Maintenance
The Fiocchi Golden Pheasant ammunition is designed for single use and does not require any maintenance. The durable plastic hulls can be reloaded by experienced reloaders.
The Bismuth shot is resistant to deformation, maintaining its shape during firing and flight, which contributes to consistent patterns and improved accuracy. With proper storage, these shells should last for years.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 12 Gauge ammunition itself does not require any accessories or customization. However, the performance of the ammunition can be further optimized by selecting the appropriate choke for your shotgun.
Tighter chokes (e.g., Modified or Full) will generally produce denser patterns at longer ranges, while more open chokes (e.g., Improved Cylinder or Skeet) will provide wider patterns at closer ranges. Experimenting with different chokes can help you fine-tune your shotgun’s performance to match the specific hunting conditions and range.
