First Thoughts on the Faxon Ascent 22 ARC 24″ Heavy Fluted Complete Upper Receiver Black
The Faxon Ascent 22 ARC 24″ Heavy Fluted Complete Upper Receiver Black promises to deliver a significant boost in accuracy and range to the AR-15 platform. Its sleek design and the 22 ARC cartridge’s reputation for high-BC bullets immediately grabbed my attention. The promise of consistent accuracy, velocity, and an exceptional shooting experience is a compelling reason to give this upper receiver a serious look.
My search began with a desire to extend the effective range of my AR-15 for varmint hunting. I wanted a setup that would allow for flatter trajectories and better wind resistance than my existing 5.56 NATO upper could provide. Unboxing the Faxon Ascent 22 ARC 24″ Heavy Fluted Complete Upper Receiver Black, I was immediately impressed with the fit and finish.
The fluted heavy barrel looked substantial and well-machined. Compared to my other AR-15 uppers, including a lightweight 16″ 5.56 and a mid-length 18″ .223 Wylde, the Faxon Ascent 22 ARC 24″ Heavy Fluted Complete Upper Receiver Black stood out due to its weight and length. I chose this over building a custom upper, betting on Faxon’s reputation for quality barrels and complete package integration.
My initial impression was one of excitement mixed with a touch of apprehension about the added weight. Would the promise of increased performance outweigh the handling characteristics of a longer, heavier barrel? I was eager to find out.
Real-World Testing: Putting Faxon Ascent 22 ARC 24″ Heavy Fluted Complete Upper Receiver Black to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Faxon Ascent 22 ARC 24″ Heavy Fluted Complete Upper Receiver Black at my local shooting range. The range provided distances out to 300 yards, perfect for evaluating the 22 ARC’s capabilities. The weather was calm and dry, ideal for sighting in a new optic.
The first few shots revealed a noticeable difference in recoil compared to my 5.56 AR-15. The recoil was milder and more of a push than a sharp snap. Getting used to the increased weight took a few magazines, but the rifle felt surprisingly stable when shooting from a rest.
After getting the optic zeroed, I began shooting at 200 and 300-yard targets. The 22 ARC’s flatter trajectory was immediately apparent, requiring less holdover than I was accustomed to.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use, the Faxon Ascent 22 ARC 24″ Heavy Fluted Complete Upper Receiver Black has proven to be remarkably reliable. I have put several hundred rounds through it, using various factory loads with bullet weights ranging from 75 to 88 grains. There have been zero malfunctions.
The nitride finish on the bolt carrier group has held up exceptionally well, showing minimal signs of wear. Cleaning the barrel after each range session has been straightforward, and I’ve noticed no significant fouling issues. This upper receiver continues to exceed my initial expectations.
Compared to some of the budget-friendly AR-15 parts I’ve used in the past, the quality and attention to detail are evident in every aspect of the Faxon Ascent 22 ARC 24″ Heavy Fluted Complete Upper Receiver Black. The improved accuracy and reliability make the additional weight a worthwhile trade-off for my intended use.
