Extrema Ratio AMF Fixed Blade Knife Review

Let’s Talk About Extrema Ratio AMF Fixed Blade Knife

The Extrema Ratio AMF Fixed Blade Knife isn’t just another knife; it’s a statement. Crafted by Extrema Ratio, a company renowned for its no-nonsense, military-grade tools, the AMF is built for those who demand unwavering reliability and performance. This fixed blade aims to be the ultimate companion for survivalists, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who needs a steadfast cutting tool that won’t let them down.

For years, I’ve been searching for a fixed blade that could genuinely handle any task I threw at it. I’ve used everything from budget-friendly options to high-end custom blades, and many have failed to live up to expectations, either through poor edge retention or inadequate handle grip. I wanted a knife that felt like an extension of my own hand, something I could trust implicitly in demanding situations.

Upon unboxing the Extrema Ratio AMF Fixed Blade Knife, I was immediately struck by its robust construction and purposeful design. The black Forprene handle offered an immediate feeling of secure grip, and the weight felt substantial without being unwieldy. The blade itself looked incredibly sharp and ready for action.

Compared to my old Ka-Bar USMC fighting knife and a Benchmade Bushcrafter, the AMF seemed to strike a middle ground between tactical aggression and practical utility. The Ka-Bar felt more like a weapon, while the Benchmade prioritized woodworking tasks. The Extrema Ratio AMF Fixed Blade Knife seemed poised to handle both.

My first impression was excitement tempered with a bit of healthy skepticism. Could this knife truly live up to the hype and the hefty price tag? Only real-world testing would tell.

Real-World Testing: Putting Extrema Ratio AMF Fixed Blade Knife to the Test

First Use Experience

My first test of the Extrema Ratio AMF Fixed Blade Knife took place during a week-long backpacking trip in the Appalachian Mountains. The terrain was varied, with dense forests, rocky inclines, and plenty of opportunities to put the blade through its paces.

I used the knife for everything from preparing kindling for campfires to food preparation and even some light batoning. Even in damp conditions, the Forprene handle provided a secure grip, and the blade maintained its edge surprisingly well. One evening, while preparing dinner in a light rain, the sure grip and easily controlled blade made cutting vegetables a breeze despite the slippery conditions.

The biggest surprise was the knife’s versatility. It felt equally at home performing delicate tasks like feathering sticks for fire starting and tougher jobs like splitting small logs.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of regular use, the Extrema Ratio AMF Fixed Blade Knife continues to impress me. The blade shows minimal signs of wear, and the edge retention is still excellent. I’ve touched it up a few times with a strop, but it hasn’t needed any serious sharpening.

The Forprene handle has proven to be incredibly durable, showing no signs of cracking or peeling, even after repeated exposure to the elements. Cleaning the knife is a breeze; a quick rinse with water and a wipe down with a cloth is usually all it takes.

Compared to my previous experiences with other fixed blades, the Extrema Ratio AMF Fixed Blade Knife is in a different class. It simply outperforms everything else I’ve used in terms of durability, edge retention, and overall reliability.
