Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN Review

First Impressions of Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN

The Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN is not just another lighter; it promises resilience and reliability in the harshest environments. Made by Exotac, a company known for its rugged outdoor gear, this lighter boasts a waterproof design, refillable fluid reservoir, and a high-spark flint wheel, positioning it as a serious contender for survivalists and outdoor enthusiasts. Its advertised durability and dependable spark mechanism immediately piqued my interest, promising a solution to the frustrating unreliability of disposable lighters in challenging weather.

My need for a reliable fire source stemmed from years of backpacking trips where disposable lighters consistently failed me due to moisture or altitude. I was seeking a dependable ignition source that could withstand the rigors of backcountry adventures. I considered options like the Zippo Stormproof and the UST StrikeForce Fire Starter, but ultimately chose the Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN because of its fully enclosed design, which looked promising for keeping moisture out, and its easily replaceable flint.

Unboxing the Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN revealed a solid, weighty piece of kit. The gray aluminum casing feels substantial and well-machined, immediately conveying a sense of quality. The quickTHREAD cap mechanism appears robust and well-engineered, providing a positive seal. I was impressed with the overall feel and apparent build quality.

Compared to the Zippo Stormproof, which felt bulky, the Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN felt more compact and streamlined. While the UST StrikeForce offered a different, spark-based approach, the Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN’s familiarity of using lighter fluid felt more comfortable and convenient. The enclosed flame promised more consistent ignition in windy conditions, pushing it ahead of the exposed spark of the UST.

My initial impression was one of excitement tempered with a touch of skepticism. The lighter certainly looked the part of a rugged and dependable tool. The real test, however, would be how it performed in the field, under real-world conditions.

Real-World Testing: Putting Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN to the Test

First Use Experience

I first tested the Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN during a weekend backpacking trip in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. The weather was typical for the area: damp, with intermittent rain and temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. I used it to light my camp stove and build a small fire for warmth.

Despite the damp conditions, the Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN performed flawlessly. The high-spark flint wheel ignited the fuel quickly, even after being exposed to light rain. Lighting tinder in windy conditions was noticeably easier than with standard butane lighters, thanks to the partial enclosure of the flame.

Using the Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN was intuitive, requiring no learning curve. The quickTHREAD cap was easy to operate, even with gloved hands. The only minor issue I encountered was that the aluminum casing became cold to the touch in freezing temperatures.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of regular use, including numerous camping trips, fishing excursions, and even as a daily carry item, the Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN has proven to be remarkably durable. There are a few minor scratches on the aluminum casing, but overall, it shows minimal signs of wear and tear. The flint replacement, which is advertised as easily replaceable, was needed after approximately 3 months of regular use, and the process lived up to the hype.

Maintaining the Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN is simple; I occasionally wipe it down with a cloth to remove dirt and debris. I also make sure to keep the fuel reservoir topped off. Its performance continues to exceed my expectations, proving more reliable than any disposable lighter I’ve ever used.

The Exotac titanLIGHT Refillable Lighter ET5500GUN dramatically outperforms previous lighters I’ve used, especially in damp conditions. Cheaper lighters often failed me, and this lighter has been consistently reliable.
