The Eotech HWS EXPS3 with Night Vision 1x 68 MOA Ring / 4 Red Dots Holographic Sight – CR123A Battery, Unlimited Eye Relief, 30 yds @ 4″ Eye Relief Field of View, 1x Fixed Magnification Made a Bold First Impression
The Eotech HWS EXPS3 with Night Vision 1x 68 MOA Ring / 4 Red Dots Holographic Sight – CR123A Battery, Unlimited Eye Relief, 30 yds @ 4″ Eye Relief Field of View, 1x Fixed Magnification isn’t just another optic; it’s a commitment to precision, versatility, and absolute readiness. Eotech has long been a frontrunner in holographic weapon sights, and the EXPS3 series is a testament to their dedication to innovation.
I needed a sighting solution that could transition seamlessly between daylight operations and nighttime engagements. I was particularly drawn to the EXPS3-4 variant due to its ballistic reticle designed for the M4 carbine and its night vision compatibility. Tired of compromising on aiming solutions based on lighting conditions, I knew this optic could potentially bridge that gap.
The moment I unboxed the Eotech HWS EXPS3, I was struck by its robust build quality. The sight felt solid and well-constructed, with a reassuring weight that hinted at its durability. It was clear that Eotech prioritized quality materials and assembly.
I considered other holographic sights, but the Eotech’s reputation for speed and clarity under stress made it a clear winner. While aimpoint offers similar red dot sights, the Eotech’s holographic technology presented a unique advantage in target acquisition speed, and the ballistic reticle held more appeal than a simple dot. The Eotech’s footprint on the rail also was more compact, another plus.
My initial impression was overwhelmingly positive. The Eotech HWS EXPS3 screamed readiness and quality, promising to be a reliable partner in any situation. It felt like I was holding a serious piece of equipment designed for serious work.
Real-World Testing: Putting Eotech HWS EXPS3 with Night Vision 1x 68 MOA Ring / 4 Red Dots Holographic Sight – CR123A Battery, Unlimited Eye Relief, 30 yds @ 4″ Eye Relief Field of View, 1x Fixed Magnification to the Test
First Use Experience
My first experience with the Eotech HWS EXPS3 was at an outdoor shooting range, simulating close-quarters battle (CQB) scenarios. The weather was partly cloudy, but the sight picture remained crystal clear. The holographic reticle provided a rapid and intuitive aiming point, allowing for quick target acquisition and engagement.
I tested the Eotech in both bright daylight and under the shade of the range’s covered firing line. The brightness settings allowed for seamless adjustment, ensuring the reticle was always visible without blooming or washing out the target. No matter what the lighting, the optic stayed bright.
The controls were intuitive and easy to manipulate, even while wearing gloves. The side-mounted buttons allowed for quick adjustments to brightness and night vision mode, without obstructing my field of view. No time was wasted on complicated settings.
There were no initial hiccups, and the optic held zero perfectly after the first range session. I was immediately impressed with the speed and accuracy it provided, especially in rapid-fire drills. I knew right away this sight would be useful.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Eotech HWS EXPS3 has proven to be a remarkably reliable optic. It has endured multiple range trips, simulated tactical training exercises, and even a few less-than-gentle bumps and scrapes. The anodized aluminum housing has held up admirably, showing only minor signs of wear.
The battery life has been decent, though I recommend keeping a spare CR123A on hand, just in case. The auto-shutdown feature helps prolong battery life, but intensive use of the night vision mode will drain it faster. I’ve learned to change the battery every few months, just to be safe.
Maintenance is straightforward, requiring only occasional cleaning of the lens with a microfiber cloth. I’ve encountered no fogging or internal condensation, even in humid conditions. A quick wipe down keeps the view crystal clear.
Compared to other optics I’ve used in the past, the Eotech HWS EXPS3 offers a noticeable improvement in target acquisition speed and overall accuracy, especially in dynamic shooting scenarios. The ballistic reticle has also helped me improve my accuracy at longer ranges. This is my go-to for almost all tactical situations now.
