I’ve spent years optimizing my loadout for backcountry trips, from lightweight tents to compact cooking systems. However, the reality of sanitation on extended trips always remained a challenge. The need for a reliable, easy-to-manage portable toilet became apparent after one too many uncomfortable situations dealing with less-than-ideal solutions.
My initial thought upon unboxing the DOMETIC -965 Portable Toilet 5.0 Gallon Platinum was about its build quality. It feels solid, with a reassuring heft that suggests it can withstand some abuse. The platinum finish is surprisingly attractive, and the overall design is far more appealing than the utilitarian look of some competing models.
Compared to other portable toilets I considered, such as the Thetford Porta Potti 550P and the Camco 41541 Portable Toilet, the DOMETIC -965 stood out due to its larger waste capacity and the positive reviews regarding its leak-proof design. I chose the DOMETIC -965 because I was seeking a reliable, easy-to-clean unit with enough capacity for multi-day trips.
