First Impressions of DeSantis SPEED SCABBARD, OWB Holster, Fits Springfield Echelon 4 With or Without Optic, Leather Construction, Right Hand, Black
The DeSantis SPEED SCABBARD is marketed as a no-nonsense, outside-the-waistband (OWB) holster designed for professionals and everyday carriers who value retention and speed. This particular model is molded specifically for the Springfield Echelon 4, accommodating versions with or without an optic, and features a classic black leather construction in a right-hand configuration. I was intrigued by its promise of secure carry without a thumb break.
For years, I’ve gravitated towards OWB holsters for their accessibility and comfort, particularly in colder months when layering is essential. My old nylon holster was starting to fray, and I needed something that could accommodate the Springfield Echelon 4’s modularity. I considered the Safariland 7TS ALS holster for its active retention and the Galco Combat Master for its classic appeal, but settled on the DeSantis SPEED SCABBARD for its blend of speed and simplicity.
The holster arrived in a simple, no-frills package. My initial impression was dominated by the smell of genuine leather – a welcome change from synthetic alternatives. The stitching appeared clean and uniform, and the molding was precise, mirroring the Echelon’s profile perfectly.
I was immediately excited by the fit and finish, it seemed like a durable holster at a decent price.
Real-World Testing: Putting DeSantis SPEED SCABBARD, OWB Holster, Fits Springfield Echelon 4 With or Without Optic, Leather Construction, Right Hand, Black to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the DeSantis SPEED SCABBARD at my local shooting range. The weather was mild and sunny, perfect for an afternoon of drills and practice. The holster was already mounted on my sturdy 1.5-inch leather gun belt.
The Echelon snapped into place with a satisfying click, held securely by the precise molding. Drawing was intuitive and smooth, requiring minimal effort to clear the holster, something I greatly appreciated when running timed drills.
There were no immediate issues after the first range session.
Extended Use & Reliability
After a few months of near-daily use, the DeSantis SPEED SCABBARD continues to impress. It has seen action during weekend hikes, concealed under a jacket during errands, and, of course, numerous range sessions. The leather has softened slightly, conforming even better to my body, enhancing comfort.
The holster shows minimal signs of wear. A few scuffs and scratches are present, but they only add character to the leather. Cleaning involves a simple wipe-down with a damp cloth and occasional application of leather conditioner.
The DeSantis SPEED SCABBARD has exceeded my expectations. Compared to my previous holsters, it offers a superior blend of retention, speed, and comfort.
