First Impressions of DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit
In the line of duty, clear and reliable communication is paramount. For over a decade, I’ve relied on various radio carrying solutions, from simple belt clips to elaborate chest rigs. The DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit promises a modular and robust solution for carrying and accessing your radio, specifically the Motorola APX 6000, but adaptable to other models. This review will explore whether it lives up to that promise, offering a secure and versatile carry option for law enforcement and first responders.
As someone who’s seen the evolution of tactical gear firsthand, I was intrigued by the DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit’s versatility. I needed a radio carrier that could seamlessly transition from plainclothes operations to duty belt carry, and even attach to MOLLE platforms when necessary.
Unboxing the kit, I was immediately struck by the apparent quality of the materials. The thermoformed polymer felt incredibly durable, and the leather components appeared well-stitched and robust. The variety of mounting options included – plain clothes mount, duty belt mount, MOLLE mount, and paddle – gave the impression of a truly comprehensive solution. Compared to a generic nylon pouch I’d been using, the DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit felt significantly more professional and purpose-built.
Initially, I was excited by the potential for adaptability and secure radio retention. However, I was also cautiously optimistic, having encountered radio carriers that promised much but fell short in real-world use. The DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit had a lot to prove.
Real-World Testing: Putting DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit to the Test
First Use Experience
My first field test of the DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit took place during a week-long tactical training exercise. I primarily used the duty belt mount during scenarios involving simulated active shooter situations and building clearing.
The radio was easy to draw and re-holster, with the audible click providing reassurance that it was securely in place. Adjusting the tension screws allowed for a personalized fit, ensuring the radio didn’t wobble but wasn’t too difficult to retrieve under stress. The wet and dusty conditions didn’t seem to affect the carrier’s performance, which maintained a secure grip on the radio. Initially, I was concerned about the bungie tie-down interfering with a quick draw, but found it to be easily managed with practice.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit has proven to be remarkably durable. There are no signs of cracking or deformation in the thermoformed polymer, and the leather components show minimal wear.
Cleaning is a breeze – a simple wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and grime. Compared to my previous nylon pouch, which would fray and retain moisture, the DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit is far more resistant to the elements. The audible click mechanism remains consistent, and the tension adjustments haven’t required any further tweaking. It significantly outperforms the universal nylon pouch I used previously, offering a much more secure and dependable carry solution.
Breaking Down the Features of DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit
Specifications
The DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit is designed to accommodate the Motorola APX 6000 radio, and similarly sized models. The carrier itself is constructed from 0.125 Thermoformed Plastic Polymer offering excellent durability and resistance to the elements.
The kit includes four distinct mounting options: the #Y62 plain clothes mount (adjustable for height and cant, fits belts up to 1.5″), the #Y101 duty belt mount (adjustable for height, fits 2.25″ duty belts), the #Y100 MOLLE mount (compatible with any MOLLE platform and 2.25″ duty belts), and the #Y61 plain clothes paddle (adjustable for angle, easy on/off). The snap-on bungie tie down provides additional security. These specifications matter because they directly impact the carrier’s ability to adapt to different operational needs and provide a secure and accessible carry solution.
Performance & Functionality
The DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit excels at its primary function: securely holding and providing quick access to your radio. The adjustable tension and audible click ensure the radio is retained even during strenuous activity, while still allowing for a smooth draw.
The ambidextrous design caters to both left- and right-handed users. The ability to use the carrier with or without an epaulet microphone is a thoughtful touch. While the bungie tie-down offers added security, some may find it slightly cumbersome at first; however, with practice, it becomes a non-issue. The DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit meets and, in many ways, exceeds expectations for a professional-grade radio carrier.
Design & Ergonomics
The thermoformed polymer construction of the DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit provides a rigid and durable frame. The kit is surprisingly lightweight, given its robust construction.
The contoured design ensures a comfortable fit against the body, regardless of the mounting option used. There’s a slight learning curve associated with adjusting the tension screws and mastering the draw stroke with the bungie tie-down, but the overall design is intuitive and user-friendly.
Durability & Maintenance
The DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit is built to withstand the rigors of daily use in demanding environments. The thermoformed polymer is resistant to impacts, abrasions, and extreme temperatures.
Maintenance is minimal, requiring only occasional cleaning with a damp cloth. Given its robust construction and high-quality materials, the DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit should provide years of reliable service.
Accessories and Customization Options
The DeSantis Radio Tender Full Kit comes with all necessary mounting hardware for the included carry options. While there are no additional accessories specifically designed for this kit, the MOLLE compatibility allows for attachment to a wide range of tactical vests and platforms.
The adjustable tension screws allow for a degree of customization in terms of draw resistance. Compatibility with specific radio models beyond the Motorola APX 6000 may vary, so it’s crucial to verify fitment before purchase.
