I’ve always been a proponent of shoulder carry, especially for larger handguns like the Colt Government. My primary motivation for seeking out a new rig was the need for a comfortable and concealed carry option during extended periods in the field, whether it’s navigating dense woodlands or conducting surveillance operations. Previous shoulder rigs lacked the adjustability and weight distribution necessary for all-day comfort, often leading to shoulder fatigue and discomfort.
Upon unboxing the DeSantis Patriot Shoulder Rig, Colt Government – 1 out of 2 models, my initial impression was positive. The ballistic nylon felt durable, and the padding appeared adequate for comfortable all-day wear. The updated thumb break system seemed intuitive and functional, promising quick and reliable access to my firearm.
Compared to other shoulder rigs I’ve used, such as the Galco Miami Classic and the Bianchi X15, the DeSantis Patriot stood out due to its wider harness and the use of Ladder Lock Straps for instant adjustments. I chose this rig over others because of the promise of superior weight distribution and the ambidextrous design, offering versatility for different scenarios. My first impression was one of cautious optimism, hoping that the rig would live up to its claims of comfort and functionality in real-world conditions.
Real-World Testing: Putting DeSantis Patriot Shoulder Rig, Colt Government – 1 out of 2 models to the Test
First Use Experience
My first field test of the DeSantis Patriot Shoulder Rig, Colt Government – 1 out of 2 models was at a local shooting range during a tactical training exercise. The day involved various shooting drills, including drawing from concealment, target acquisition, and movement under fire. I also tested it during a weekend hiking trip through the Appalachian Mountains, exposing it to varying weather conditions.
The rig performed admirably under dry conditions, allowing for a smooth and consistent draw stroke. However, during a light rain, I noticed the nylon retaining some moisture, though it didn’t significantly impact the rig’s functionality. The ease of use was immediately apparent, requiring minimal adjustments to achieve a comfortable and secure fit.
Initially, the thumb break felt slightly stiff, requiring a deliberate motion to release the handgun. However, after a few practice draws, it became much smoother and more natural. There were no major issues during this first use, only the minor observation about the thumb break requiring a brief break-in period.

After several weeks of consistent use, the DeSantis Patriot Shoulder Rig, Colt Government – 1 out of 2 models has proven to be a reliable and comfortable carry option. The rig has held up well to daily wear and tear, showing no significant signs of damage or degradation. The ballistic nylon construction has proven to be resilient, and the stitching remains intact.

Compared to my previous shoulder rig, which required frequent adjustments and often caused discomfort, the DeSantis Patriot has exceeded my expectations in terms of comfort and reliability.
