Defcon 5 Thunder Vest Carrier Review

Let’s Talk About Defcon 5 Thunder Vest Carrier

The Defcon 5 Thunder Vest Carrier is a new generation plate carrier designed by Defcon 5, an Italian company known for its tactical gear and outdoor equipment. It is constructed from durable 900 Denier Polyester, reinforced at each seam, and boasts internal padding for comfort and breathability. The vest aims to provide a customizable and comfortable platform for carrying ballistic plates and tactical pouches in demanding situations.

I was looking for a reliable and modular plate carrier that wouldn’t break the bank for use in force on force training and potentially as a base for a lightweight bug-out bag. I needed something that could accept standard-sized plates, offered ample MOLLE webbing for attaching pouches, and prioritized comfort for extended wear.

Upon unboxing, the Defcon 5 Thunder Vest Carrier felt reassuringly solid. The 900 Denier Polyester had a reassuring heft, and the stitching looked clean and durable. It felt a bit stiff initially, but I anticipated that it would break in with use.

Compared to a Condor LCS Vanquish Armor System I’ve used previously, the Defcon 5 felt slightly less bulky. It also seemed more focused on breathability. Against a more premium Crye Precision JPC, the Thunder Vest Carrier lacks the advanced features and weight savings, but the price difference is significant. I chose the Defcon 5 Thunder Vest Carrier for its balance of affordability and essential features for my training and preparedness needs.

My first impression was cautiously optimistic. It appeared well-made for the price, though I was eager to see how it performed under load and in real-world conditions.

Real-World Testing: Putting Defcon 5 Thunder Vest Carrier to the Test

First Use Experience

I first tested the Defcon 5 Thunder Vest Carrier at an outdoor training facility during a force-on-force scenario. The weather was mild but humid, providing a good initial test of its breathability. I used it with dummy plates and attached various magazine pouches, a radio pouch, and a small medical kit.

The vest performed reasonably well in these conditions. I was able to maneuver relatively freely, and the internal padding did a decent job of preventing chafing. The MOLLE system was easy to use for attaching and reconfiguring pouches.

I initially found the shoulder straps a bit stiff, causing some discomfort after a couple of hours. Also, I noticed that the elastic adjustment band on the back tended to loosen slightly over time, requiring occasional readjustment.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of use in various training exercises and drills, the Defcon 5 Thunder Vest Carrier has held up surprisingly well. There are no signs of tears or significant wear on the fabric or stitching. The Velcro closures are still strong and secure.

The vest has proven to be relatively easy to clean. Mud and dirt wipe off easily, and the polyester material doesn’t seem to absorb odors. I’ve spot-cleaned it with mild detergent and water as needed.

Compared to the higher-end plate carriers I’ve used in the past, the Defcon 5 Thunder Vest Carrier isn’t as comfortable for extended periods. However, considering its price point, it performs admirably and offers a solid balance of durability and functionality.
