DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. Review

The DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. Made a Bold First Impression

The DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. promises a reactive shooting experience without the inherent dangers of traditional steel targets. From DA Targets, this 6-inch gong utilizes a self-sealing polymer, indicating hits through a noticeable color change, specifically designed for warmer conditions. I was immediately intrigued by the prospect of a safer, yet still satisfying, target practice session.

My journey to the DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. began with a growing frustration with the limitations of paper targets. They offer no immediate feedback beyond the hole you punch and are static, lacking the dynamic element that makes shooting engaging. Steel targets, while offering that satisfying ping, introduce the risk of ricochet and fragmentation, requiring careful setup and adherence to strict safety protocols. I craved something in between: the instant gratification of a reactive target with reduced risk.

Upon unboxing, the DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. felt surprisingly substantial. The polymer material seemed robust, and the integrated strap appeared sturdy enough for easy setup on a variety of stands. The bright orange color was immediately appealing, offering high visibility against a range backdrop. It lacked the cold, hard feel of steel but retained a satisfying heft that hinted at durability.

Compared to similarly sized steel targets or self-healing polymer targets from other manufacturers, such as Birchwood Casey’s DuraSeal line, the DA Targets offering distinguished itself with its specific temperature rating and integrated strap. While some polymer targets focus on all-weather performance, the DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. explicitly caters to warmer climates. Other targets I considered either lacked a convenient hanging system or didn’t provide a clear visual indication of hits.

My first impression was one of cautious optimism. The DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. seemed to address my specific needs and offered a unique combination of safety, reactivity, and convenience. I was eager to put it through its paces and see if it lived up to its promise.

Real-World Testing: Putting DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. to the Test

First Use Experience

My initial testing took place at my local outdoor shooting range on a sunny afternoon with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This fell squarely within the target’s specified 60-100 degree operating range. I suspended the DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. from a simple shepherd’s hook stand using the integrated strap, a process that took mere seconds.

I tested the target with a variety of firearms, including a 9mm handgun at 15 yards and a .223 AR-15 rifle at 50 yards. The handgun rounds left a distinct color change upon impact, a bright yellow mark against the orange background. The rifle rounds created a more significant impact, with a larger area of color change. The DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. swung noticeably with each hit, providing clear auditory and visual feedback.

The target performed admirably, even when the range kicked up dust. The dust didn’t appear to interfere with the color-changing reaction. I experienced no issues during the first session. The rounds cleanly penetrated the material, leaving a vibrant mark.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of consistent use, the DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. has proven to be surprisingly durable. The color change remains vivid and easily visible, even after hundreds of rounds.

While some minor surface abrasions are visible, the target has not shown any signs of cracking or structural damage. The self-sealing polymer appears to be holding up remarkably well, effectively closing the holes left by each round.

Maintenance is virtually non-existent. A quick wipe down with a damp cloth removes any accumulated dirt or grime. Compared to steel targets, which require periodic painting to maintain visibility, the DA Targets Reactive Gong Target Warm 6 in. requires minimal upkeep. It outperforms paper targets in durability and ease of use and offers a safer and more engaging experience than traditional steel.
