Let’s Dive into Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled
The Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled is a seemingly simple piece of kit that promises to bring a level of stability to shooting scenarios where level ground is a myth. Crosstac designed this bag to drape over uneven surfaces, providing a stable platform for rifles, scopes, or even cameras. Its prefilled nature and grippy exterior suggest a ready-to-go solution for shooters of all levels.
I’ve spent years contorting myself into unnatural positions, trying to get a steady shot off a fence post or rocky outcrop. A reliable, portable shooting rest has always been high on my list, and the Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled seemed to offer a practical solution. I was looking for a compact, stable, and versatile platform that wouldn’t break the bank or weigh me down.
Upon unboxing, the Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled felt surprisingly substantial. The Mil-Spec coated fabric felt rugged, while the pre-filled walnut media gave it a reassuring weight and shape. The stitching looked robust, and the non-skid rubberized bottom offered a promising grip.
Compared to other shooting rests I’ve tried – flimsy bipods that sink in soft ground, or bulky sandbags that are a pain to carry – the Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled seemed to strike a good balance between portability and stability. I considered other saddle-style bags, but the Crosstac won me over with its pre-filled convenience and reputation for durability. I was definitely excited to put it through its paces.
Real-World Testing: Putting Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing ground for the Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled was a local shooting range, specifically their uneven, outdoor rifle section. I used it with both a .223 AR-15 and a .308 bolt-action rifle, placing it on wooden barricades, fences, and even directly on the ground. The bag performed admirably, providing a noticeable improvement in stability compared to shooting unsupported.
The conditions were dry and mild, so I didn’t get to test its performance in wet weather right away. Ease of use was immediate; I simply draped the bag over the chosen surface, nestled the rifle in the saddle, and adjusted for height. There were no surprises, just a steady, reliable platform.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled is holding up remarkably well. There are no signs of wear and tear on the Mil-Spec coated fabric, and the stitching remains intact. The walnut media inside hasn’t compacted or shifted significantly, maintaining the bag’s shape and stability.
Maintenance has been minimal; I simply brush off any dirt or debris after each use. It seems incredibly durable. Compared to a previous, cheaper sandbag that ripped after only a few uses, the Crosstac is a clear winner. It definitely outperforms my expectations for a shooting rest in this price range.
Breaking Down the Features of Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled
Specifications
- Mil-Spec Coated Fabric: The bag boasts a super tough, rubberized grippy exterior, providing excellent resistance to abrasion and the elements. This coating ensures the bag stays put on slippery surfaces and withstands rough handling in the field.
- 1000-D Cordura: The use of 1000-D Cordura fabric contributes to the bag’s overall durability and resistance to tears and punctures. This rugged material ensures the bag can withstand years of use in demanding environments.
- Prefilled with Walnut Media: The bag comes prefilled with a coarse grind of walnut media. This provides the right balance of flexibility and stability, unlike finer media which can make bags too hard and unyielding.
- Zippered Adjustment: A zippered opening allows users to easily adjust the fill level or replace the walnut media with another type of fill, such as sand or plastic beads, to customize the bag’s weight and firmness. This versatility makes it adaptable to different shooting styles and preferences.
- Dimensions: The bag measures approximately 7.5 inches high from the bottom to the middle of the rifle rest, and 8 inches high at the sides. It is approximately 8 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep, with saddle legs that are a full 4 inches high.
- Saddle Cut Top: The saddle cut top creates a stable platform for the rifle, scope, or camera. This design helps to cradle the firearm securely, minimizing movement and improving accuracy.
- Rubberized Non-Skid Bottom: The rubberized non-skid bottom provides excellent grip on a variety of surfaces, preventing the bag from slipping or sliding during use. This feature is particularly important when shooting from uneven or unstable positions.
Performance & Functionality
The Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled excels at providing a stable and consistent shooting platform in diverse field conditions. Its design effectively mitigates the challenges of uneven terrain. The bag’s strengths lie in its portability, ease of use, and ability to conform to various surfaces.
However, it may not provide the same level of rock-solid stability as a dedicated bench rest, especially with heavier rifles. It exceeds expectations for a versatile and field-ready shooting rest.
Design & Ergonomics
The Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled is well-designed with a focus on functionality and durability. The materials used are high-quality, contributing to a rugged yet manageable weight. There is no learning curve; it’s ready to use straight out of the box.
Durability & Maintenance
Given its robust construction and durable materials, the Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled should last for many years with proper care. Maintenance is straightforward, involving only occasional cleaning. The zippered opening also allows for easy replacement of the fill material if needed.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Crosstac Saddle Shooting Rest Bag / Prefilled does not come with any additional accessories. The zippered opening allows for customization of the fill material to adjust weight and firmness.
