Boasting both white and red LED options, along with the focusing Pure Beam technology, this headlamp promises to be a reliable companion for various outdoor and tactical applications. As someone who has spent over a decade evaluating gear in demanding environments, I’m eager to dissect this headlamp and see if it lives up to its potential.
My search for the perfect headlamp is ongoing, a quest for a light that balances power, efficiency, and durability. I needed a hands-free lighting solution that offered both bright white light for general tasks and a red light to preserve my night vision during astronomy outings. The Coast FL85 seemed to offer a good balance of these features at a reasonable price point.
Out of the box, the Coast FL85 feels lightweight and well-constructed. The plastic housing appears robust enough to withstand some abuse, and the adjustable headband feels comfortable against the forehead. Compared to bulkier headlamps I’ve used, its streamlined design is a welcome change.
I initially considered the Black Diamond Spot 350 and the Petzl Actik Core, both popular options in this category. However, the Coast FL85’s dual-color functionality and focusing beam swayed my decision, promising greater versatility. My first impression was one of cautious optimism; the headlamp felt good in hand, but the real test would be in the field.

The plastic housing shows no signs of cracking or damage, despite being subjected to some minor bumps and scrapes. The headband has retained its elasticity and the light continues to function as expected.
Maintaining the headlamp is simple, requiring only occasional wiping to remove dirt and grime. Compared to some older headlamps I own, which have suffered from battery corrosion and switch failures, the Coast FL85 seems to be built to last. Its performance has consistently met my expectations.
