First Thoughts on the CMMG ENDEAVOR MK3 UPPER GROUP 308 Win 20 Black
The CMMG ENDEAVOR MK3 UPPER GROUP 308 Win 20 Black immediately caught my attention for its promise of bridging the gap between maneuverability and long-range capability in the .308 Winchester platform. As someone who’s spent over a decade evaluating tactical and hunting gear, I’m always on the lookout for that elusive balance between power and practicality. CMMG has a reputation for quality, and this upper group seemed poised to deliver just that.
My need for a versatile .308 stemmed from wanting a capable rifle that could pull double duty as both a hunting platform for medium to large game and a reliable option for longer-range target shooting. I was tired of needing different rifles for different tasks. I needed one that could handle both.
The unboxing experience was solid; everything was well-protected. The initial impression was positive, the black Cerakote finish looked immaculate, and the weight felt appropriate for the intended use. The build quality exuded confidence.
Compared to similar offerings from Aero Precision and Bravo Company Manufacturing, the CMMG stood out with its included ZEROED components. This saved me the hassle of sourcing a charging handle and muzzle brake separately. It felt like a more complete, ready-to-go package. My first thought was, “Finally, an upper that isn’t just about the barrel and receiver!”
I was excited. This wasn’t just another AR-10 upper; it felt like a thoughtfully designed system. My initial impressions were positive. I was eager to see if the performance would match the promise.
Real-World Testing: Putting CMMG ENDEAVOR MK3 UPPER GROUP 308 Win 20 Black to the Test
First Use Experience
My first range session with the CMMG ENDEAVOR MK3 UPPER GROUP 308 Win 20 Black was at a local outdoor range under clear, sunny conditions. Mounted on a compatible lower receiver, the rifle felt well-balanced. The first few shots were promising, with consistent groupings at 100 yards.
I ran the upper through its paces with a variety of ammunition, including both match-grade and surplus loads. The rifle cycled reliably, with no noticeable malfunctions or issues. It handled the .308 Winchester recoil reasonably well, aided by the ZEROED muzzle brake.
The only initial surprise was the sound. The ZEROED muzzle brake is effective, but it is loud. Ear protection is absolutely critical, and I would advise anyone near the shooter to also use hearing protection.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use, including multiple range sessions and a weekend hog hunt in central Texas, the CMMG ENDEAVOR MK3 UPPER GROUP 308 Win 20 Black has proven to be remarkably reliable. There are minimal signs of wear and tear on the Cerakote finish, even after being bumped around in a truck and exposed to brush.
The rifle cleans up easily after each use. A standard AR-10 cleaning kit and some quality solvent are all that’s needed to keep it running smoothly. So far, the CMMG is outperforming my previous .308 AR builds in terms of both reliability and accuracy.
