First Thoughts on the CMMG Dissent 22 ARC 16.10″ – Charcoal Green – Upper
The CMMG Dissent 22 ARC 16.10″ – Charcoal Green – Upper is more than just another AR-15 upper receiver; it’s a gateway to a versatile, accurate, and quiet shooting experience. Manufactured by CMMG, this upper receiver chambered in .22 ARC offers a unique blend of features designed for both recreational shooting and serious training. Its standout attribute is the compact, bufferless design, making it an intriguing choice for those seeking a highly adaptable platform.
Years of experience in the tactical and outdoor gear field have taught me the importance of modularity and caliber conversion in weapon platforms. I was looking for an upper that could easily transform my existing AR-15 lower into a dedicated .22LR trainer, offering cost-effective practice without sacrificing the familiar ergonomics of my primary rifle. I wanted something reliable, accurate, and easy to maintain – something that would stand up to frequent use.
My first impression upon unboxing the CMMG Dissent 22 ARC 16.10″ – Charcoal Green – Upper was one of solid construction and thoughtful design. The Charcoal Green finish is aesthetically pleasing and appears durable. The weight felt balanced, suggesting quality materials and attention to detail.
Compared to other .22LR conversion kits and dedicated uppers I’ve used (like the Brownells BRN-22 and the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22), the CMMG Dissent immediately stood out due to its integrated bufferless system. This eliminates the need for a buffer tube, making it ideal for compact builds and AR pistol configurations. I chose the CMMG Dissent 22 ARC 16.10″ – Charcoal Green – Upper because of its unique design, its promise of improved accuracy with the 22 ARC chambering, and the potential for greater versatility compared to other .22LR options.
I was excited to see if this innovative design would live up to the hype. The initial impression was positive, sparking anticipation for range testing and real-world applications.
Real-World Testing: Putting CMMG Dissent 22 ARC 16.10″ – Charcoal Green – Upper to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing of the CMMG Dissent 22 ARC 16.10″ – Charcoal Green – Upper took place at an outdoor shooting range, under clear, sunny conditions. The goal was to assess its accuracy, reliability, and ease of use with various .22LR ammunition types. I ran hundreds of rounds through it that day.
The upper performed admirably, exhibiting consistent cycling and acceptable accuracy with standard velocity ammunition. The bufferless system felt surprisingly smooth, with minimal recoil, making it a joy to shoot. While high-velocity ammo was also tested, standard velocity proved more accurate.
There was a brief learning curve in understanding the unique disassembly procedure required by the bufferless system. A failure to extract occurred within the first 50 rounds, attributable to a slightly dirty chamber, but cleaning resolved this issue immediately.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use, the CMMG Dissent 22 ARC 16.10″ – Charcoal Green – Upper has proven to be a reliable and enjoyable addition to my arsenal. I’ve used it in numerous range sessions and even integrated it into some basic firearms training drills.
The Charcoal Green finish shows minimal signs of wear, indicating good durability. Regular cleaning and lubrication are essential, particularly the chamber area, to maintain consistent cycling. The bolt and chamber need to be cleaned every 300-500 rounds to avoid malfunction.
Compared to previous .22LR AR conversions I’ve owned, the CMMG Dissent stands out in terms of accuracy and smooth operation, but more importantly, its bufferless design provides an unmatched compact and adaptable platform that significantly surpasses prior experience.
