The Carlson’s Choke Tubes Black Cloud Beretta/Benelli Mobil 12ga 2 Pack, MR & LR: promises enhanced performance with Federal Black Cloud ammunition in Beretta and Benelli Mobil-choked shotguns. This choke tube set, manufactured by Carlson’s Choke Tubes, includes a Mid Range (MR) and a Long Range (LR) choke, both designed to optimize the unique flight characteristics of Black Cloud shells. Let’s explore if these tubes live up to the hype and offer a real advantage in the field.
As a seasoned waterfowl hunter and tactical shooting enthusiast, I was perpetually seeking tighter, more consistent patterns with my 12-gauge. I’d heard whispers about how the Carlson’s Black Cloud chokes were designed specifically for this purpose. Were they truly a game-changer, or just another marketing ploy?
The packaging was straightforward, and upon unboxing, the choke tubes felt substantial and well-made. The titanium coating gave them a sleek, durable appearance. The included choke wrench was a nice touch, ensuring easy installation and removal.
I considered other choke tube options, including some from Briley and Patternmaster. Ultimately, I chose the Carlson’s Black Cloud set due to their specific focus on optimizing Black Cloud ammunition and their reputation for quality at a reasonable price point. My initial impression was positive. I was eager to see if the hype matched reality, and how they performed in live-fire testing.
Real-World Testing: Putting Carlson’s Choke Tubes Black Cloud Beretta/Benelli Mobil 12ga 2 Pack, MR & LR: to the Test
First Use Experience
My first field test involved a late-season goose hunt in the frigid, windswept plains of South Dakota. I installed the MR choke in my Benelli Montefeltro, paired with Federal Black Cloud 3″ BB loads. The conditions were challenging with sustained winds and temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
The MR choke delivered noticeably tighter patterns than my factory modified choke at 30-40 yards. Crippled birds were significantly reduced. There was no issue installing or removing the choke, even with gloved hands.
There were no immediate issues after the first use, other than a slight learning curve in estimating range due to the tighter patterns. The chokes threaded smoothly and felt secure throughout the hunt.
Extended Use & Reliability
After a full season of waterfowl hunting and several range sessions, the Carlson’s Black Cloud chokes have proven their worth. They’ve held up exceptionally well, showing no signs of wear or corrosion despite exposure to harsh weather and corrosive powder residue. Cleaning has been simple, requiring only a quick scrub with a bore brush and solvent after each use.
Compared to my previous experiences with factory chokes, the Carlson’s set offers a significant improvement in pattern density and consistency, especially with Black Cloud ammunition. I’ve seen a tangible increase in clean kills and a reduction in wounded birds. They outperform my expectations, making them a valuable addition to my shotgun setup.
