Bushnell Match Pro ED 5-30x56mm Rifle Scope, 34mm Tube, First Focal Plane Review

First Impressions of Bushnell Match Pro ED 5-30x56mm Rifle Scope, 34mm Tube, First Focal Plane

In the realm of precision shooting, optics are paramount. The Bushnell Match Pro ED 5-30x56mm Rifle Scope, 34mm Tube, First Focal Plane aims to be a game-changer, offering a blend of high magnification, extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, and a feature-rich design, all at a competitive price point. This scope is clearly designed to bridge the gap between affordability and performance, and I was eager to see if it delivered.

My journey to acquiring this scope started with a growing frustration with my existing optics. I needed a scope that could offer both the clarity needed for long-range target identification and the precision required for competitive shooting. The claims surrounding the Bushnell Match Pro ED’s ED glass, wide magnification range, and user-friendly features piqued my interest, and I felt compelled to give it a try.

Upon unboxing, the Bushnell Match Pro ED immediately impressed with its solid feel. The 34mm tube gives it a substantial presence, and the turrets have a reassuring tactile click. It felt well-built and robust, certainly exceeding my initial expectations based on the price.

Comparing it to my older Vortex Viper PST Gen I and a friend’s Arken EP5, the Bushnell seemed to strike a better balance. It appeared brighter than the Vortex and had a more refined feel than the Arken, even if the Arken had some appealing features on paper. I was immediately excited and hoped it performed as good as it felt.

Real-World Testing: Putting Bushnell Match Pro ED 5-30x56mm Rifle Scope, 34mm Tube, First Focal Plane to the Test

First Use Experience

I mounted the Bushnell Match Pro ED on my custom-built AR-15 chambered in 6.5 Grendel, a platform I use primarily for target shooting and occasional varmint hunting. My first range session involved zeroing the scope at 100 yards and then stretching its legs out to 600 yards on steel targets. The weather was typical for early spring: overcast with intermittent light rain.

The Bushnell’s EXO Barrier coating lived up to its claims, shedding water droplets and maintaining a clear sight picture despite the damp conditions. The generous eye relief and forgiving eyebox made it comfortable to use even at higher magnifications. I found the turrets to be easy to manipulate, even with gloves on, and the clicks were distinct and repeatable.

My only initial concern was the illumination. While the reticle was certainly visible in low light, at the brightest settings, there was some bloom. This was only at the very highest setting, though, and the other 10 levels were still excellent.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of regular use, the Bushnell Match Pro ED has proven to be a reliable and durable optic. It has endured multiple range trips, a couple of varmint hunts, and even a local PRS-style match. There are no signs of significant wear and tear on the finish or the mechanics of the scope.

Cleaning the lenses is easy thanks to the EXO Barrier coating, which repels dust and grime. I’ve found that a simple lens cloth is sufficient to keep the glass clean and clear. The tracking has remained consistent, and I have yet to experience any shift in zero or other malfunctions.

Compared to my previous experiences with other scopes in this price range, the Bushnell Match Pro ED is a clear winner. It delivers a level of optical performance and mechanical reliability that I would expect from a scope costing significantly more. The clarity is much better than my old Vortex, and the overall feel is just as good as scopes costing 50% more.

The ED glass effectively minimizes chromatic aberration, resulting in a sharp and color-accurate sight picture.
