My first impression upon unboxing was one of pleasant surprise. The nylon material felt durable, and the 1-3/4″ of padding felt adequate for its intended purpose. It was lightweight and unassuming, exactly what I was looking for in a simple pistol rug.
I considered a couple of other options, including a more expensive hard case and a different brand’s padded pistol rug. Ultimately, the Bulldog Cases & Vaults model won out because of its price point and the positive user reviews highlighting its durability and zipper quality. It struck me as the smart choice for basic protection without breaking the bank.

Real-World Testing: Putting Bulldog Cases & Vaults Black Pistol Rug Medium BD601 to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial test was at my local outdoor shooting range. I transported a 4-inch barreled Smith & Wesson M&P pistol in the Bulldog Cases & Vaults Black Pistol Rug Medium BD601. The pistol fit snugly inside, and the padding provided a noticeable buffer against bumps during the drive.
The weather was dry and sunny, so I didn’t get to test its water resistance immediately. However, the nylon material seemed like it would offer at least some protection against light rain. The ease of use was immediately apparent.
There were no issues after the first use; it performed exactly as intended. I felt confident that my pistol was adequately protected during transport.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Bulldog Cases & Vaults Black Pistol Rug Medium BD601 is holding up remarkably well. I’ve used it to transport various pistols, and it continues to provide consistent protection. There are no signs of tearing or seam separation.
The only minor wear and tear is some slight fraying of the nylon around the zipper pull. It’s easily manageable and doesn’t impact the functionality of the case. Cleaning is simple; I just wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or grime.
Compared to my previous reliance on makeshift solutions, the Bulldog Cases & Vaults Black Pistol Rug Medium BD601 is a significant upgrade. It offers superior protection, is more convenient to use, and presents a professional appearance. It definitely exceeds my expectations for a budget-friendly pistol rug.
