BRO CARNIVORE-450B-CU16-BLK 450BM 16 SPEC15 UPPER Review

The BRO CARNIVORE-450B-CU16-BLK 450BM 16 SPEC15 UPPER Made a Bold First Impression

The BRO CARNIVORE-450B-CU16-BLK 450BM 16 SPEC15 UPPER isn’t just another AR-15 upper; it’s a purpose-built, hard-hitting solution for hunters and shooters who demand serious power and accuracy at mid-range. Chambered in the potent .450 Bushmaster, this upper from BRO (Black Rifle Outfitters) promises devastating stopping power in a lightweight and maneuverable package. I was looking for an AR upper that could reliably and ethically take down large game like deer and hogs at distances beyond shotgun range but without the recoil and expense of larger caliber rifles.

The BRO CARNIVORE-450B-CU16-BLK 450BM 16 SPEC15 UPPER arrived well-packaged, showcasing the attention to detail that BRO is known for. Lifting it from the box, I was immediately impressed by the solid feel and clean lines. The black finish is evenly applied and durable, and the overall construction exudes quality. It felt noticeably lighter than some other .450 Bushmaster uppers I’ve handled, a crucial factor for long days in the field.

I considered building a .450 Bushmaster upper myself, but the BRO offering promised a complete, ready-to-go solution with guaranteed compatibility and performance. Compared to a complete Ruger AR-556 MPR in .450 Bushmaster, the BRO upper allowed me to utilize a lower receiver I already owned and trusted. Also, other similar complete uppers from manufacturers like Bear Creek Arsenal seemed to have a hit-or-miss reputation for reliability; I was willing to pay a bit more for what I hoped would be a more refined and dependable product from BRO. My initial impression was excitement – I couldn’t wait to get this upper mounted and zeroed.

Real-World Testing: Putting BRO CARNIVORE-450B-CU16-BLK 450BM 16 SPEC15 UPPER to the Test

First Use Experience

My first outing with the BRO CARNIVORE-450B-CU16-BLK 450BM 16 SPEC15 UPPER was at my local shooting range, a mix of covered benches and open-air bays. I was primarily focused on zeroing the scope I mounted (a Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9×40) and getting a feel for the .450 Bushmaster’s recoil and trajectory. The weather was slightly overcast, with a mild breeze, perfect conditions for shooting.

The upper mated seamlessly to my existing AR-15 lower receiver. The recoil was stout, as expected from the .450 Bushmaster, but surprisingly manageable. I experienced no malfunctions during the initial 50 rounds, and the accuracy was immediately apparent, producing consistent groupings at 50 and 100 yards. I did notice a slight increase in gas blowback compared to my 5.56 upper, something to keep in mind during prolonged shooting sessions.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of use, the BRO CARNIVORE-450B-CU16-BLK 450BM 16 SPEC15 UPPER has proven to be remarkably reliable. I’ve put several hundred rounds through it, ranging from factory loads to some carefully crafted handloads, without a single failure to feed or extract. The finish has held up well to being carried through dense brush.

There are no significant signs of wear and tear, even after being exposed to mud and rain during a recent hog hunt. Cleaning is straightforward; the upper disassembles easily, and a quick wipe-down of the bolt and barrel is all that’s typically required. Compared to my previous experiences with budget AR uppers, the BRO exhibits a noticeably higher level of quality and craftsmanship. It has significantly outperformed my expectations in terms of reliability and accuracy.
