First Thoughts on the Breakthrough Clean Basic Cleaning Kit Multi-Caliber Universal
The Breakthrough Clean Basic Cleaning Kit Multi-Caliber Universal promises a simple yet effective solution for firearm maintenance. This all-in-one kit, manufactured by Breakthrough Clean, boasts a selection of their renowned cleaners and lubricants. It aims to offer a comprehensive cleaning experience without the need for numerous individual products.
As an outdoor and tactical gear specialist, maintaining my firearms is paramount. I was looking for a compact and convenient cleaning solution for range days and quick maintenance after hunts. I wanted something that could handle multiple calibers without needing to carry multiple, bulky kits.
Upon unboxing, the Breakthrough Clean Basic Cleaning Kit Multi-Caliber Universal feels well-organized and compact. The inclusion of the double-ended nylon brush and microfiber towel are thoughtful touches. The bottles of solvent, oil, and grease are small enough to be easily packed.
Compared to other universal cleaning kits I’ve used, such as those from Hoppe’s and Real Avid, this kit emphasizes portability and the specific chemical formulations offered by Breakthrough Clean. I chose it primarily for the reputation of their cleaning products and the promise of a superior clean compared to more generic offerings. Initially, I was cautiously optimistic. I hoped it would live up to the hype surrounding Breakthrough Clean products.
Real-World Testing: Putting Breakthrough Clean Basic Cleaning Kit Multi-Caliber Universal to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Breakthrough Clean Basic Cleaning Kit Multi-Caliber Universal after a range session with my AR-15 (.223/5.56) and my Glock 19 (9mm). The shooting range was outdoors, and conditions were relatively dry and dusty. I utilized the kit immediately after shooting, while the firearm was still moderately warm.
The Breakthrough Military Grade Solvent effectively removed powder residue and carbon fouling from the AR-15 bolt carrier group and the Glock slide. The double-ended nylon brush proved useful for scrubbing hard-to-reach areas. There were no immediate issues, and the cleaning process was fairly straightforward.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use (approximately twice per month), the Breakthrough Clean Basic Cleaning Kit Multi-Caliber Universal has held up reasonably well. The bottles of solvent, oil, and grease still have a fair amount of product left. The nylon brush shows minimal signs of wear.
The microfiber towel has been washed several times and remains functional, although slightly faded. I have noticed that while the solvent is excellent for fresh fouling, it struggles somewhat with older, more stubborn carbon buildup. Overall, it outperforms some of the cheaper, generic cleaning kits I’ve used, but doesn’t necessarily replace a more thorough deep-cleaning process with dedicated tools and solvents.
