First Thoughts on the Boyt Harness 0PP640003 Rectangular Pistol Rug Handgun Black Canvas 9″ x 6″
In the world of tactical and outdoor gear, protecting your investment is paramount. The Boyt Harness 0PP640003 Rectangular Pistol Rug Handgun Black Canvas 9″ x 6″ promises a simple, affordable solution. It’s a basic pistol rug from Boyt Harness, crafted from waxed canvas, designed to keep your handgun safe from scratches and minor bumps during transport and storage.
As someone who’s spent over a decade handling firearms in various environments, from dusty ranges to damp hunting camps, I understand the need for reliable protection. I was looking for a simple, no-frills case to protect a newly acquired compact pistol. The Boyt Harness rug seemed like a practical choice, offering a classic look with a functional design.
Upon receiving the Boyt Harness pistol rug, I was immediately drawn to the classic aesthetic of the waxed canvas. The material felt sturdy and the stitching appeared clean. It’s undeniably lightweight, which is a plus when packing multiple items.
Compared to some hard-sided cases or more elaborate padded bags, the Boyt Harness rug felt decidedly minimalist. I considered a padded nylon case from Uncle Mike’s and a lockable hard case from Plano. I opted for the Boyt Harness for its compact size and waxed canvas construction, hoping for a balance of protection and portability without excessive bulk.
My initial impression was cautiously optimistic. The rug seemed well-made for its price point, but I was eager to see how it would perform in real-world conditions. Would the minimalist design provide adequate protection?
Real-World Testing: Putting Boyt Harness 0PP640003 Rectangular Pistol Rug Handgun Black Canvas 9″ x 6″ to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial test of the Boyt Harness 0PP640003 Rectangular Pistol Rug Handgun Black Canvas 9″ x 6″ was at my local shooting range. I needed a quick and easy way to transport my compact 9mm pistol. The rug performed adequately, keeping the pistol from scratching against other items in my range bag.
The conditions were dry and sunny, so I couldn’t assess its water resistance. The simple design meant there was no learning curve. I simply unzipped the rug, placed the pistol inside, and zipped it closed.
There were no immediate issues, although I did notice that the flannel lining seemed somewhat thin. I was curious to see how well it would hold up over time.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use, the Boyt Harness pistol rug has proven adequate for light-duty protection. It lives primarily in my range bag, safeguarding my pistol from minor bumps and scrapes. The waxed canvas has shown some resistance to light moisture, but I wouldn’t trust it in a downpour.
There are no significant signs of wear and tear so far, but I can see the flannel lining starting to flatten in areas. Cleaning is simple; a quick wipe with a damp cloth is usually sufficient.
Compared to my experience with a hard-sided case, the Boyt Harness rug offers less overall protection but is far more convenient to carry. It’s a trade-off between security and portability. It hasn’t disappointed, but it certainly doesn’t outperform.

Performance & Functionality
The Boyt Harness pistol rug performs its basic function of protecting a handgun from scratches and minor impacts reasonably well. It is easy to use and lightweight. Its primary weakness is its lack of substantial padding or locking mechanisms.
It meets expectations for a basic pistol rug at its price point. However, it doesn’t offer the security or robust protection of more expensive options.
