My journey to this stock began with a desire to modernize an older Winchester 70 that had been sitting in my safe for years. The original stock, while functional, lacked the adjustability needed for consistent accuracy across different shooting positions. I was looking for a stock that could offer both improved comfort and enhanced performance.
Unboxing the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Rifle Stock At One Winchester 70 No Floor Plate Short Action FBC, I was immediately struck by the vibrant color and the solid feel of the wood. The Applejack finish is even more appealing in person than in the pictures, and the stock felt substantial without being overly heavy. The fit and finish appeared excellent, suggesting a high level of craftsmanship.
Compared to other aftermarket stocks I considered, such as synthetic options from McMillan or Bell and Carlson, the Boyds stood out for its blend of traditional aesthetics and modern functionality. While synthetic stocks offer excellent weather resistance, I preferred the feel and look of a wood stock, especially on a classic rifle like the Winchester 70. The adjustability of the At-One design sealed the deal, offering features not typically found in traditional wood stocks.
My first impression was one of excitement. First Use Experience
The initial test of the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Rifle Stock At One Winchester 70 No Floor Plate Short Action FBC took place at my local shooting range. I wanted to zero the rifle with the new stock and evaluate how the adjustability features impacted my shooting performance from both a benchrest and prone position. The adjustability of the At-One stock proved invaluable right from the start. Being able to quickly adjust the length of pull and comb height allowed me to achieve a perfect cheek weld and comfortable shooting posture, regardless of my position. This made a noticeable difference in my ability to maintain a consistent sight picture and trigger pull.
One minor issue I encountered was the initial stiffness of the adjustment mechanisms. The length-of-pull adjustment, in particular, required a bit of effort to move. However, this seemed to ease up with repeated use, and I expect it will become smoother over time.

Compared to my previous experiences with factory synthetic stocks, the Boyds stock offers a superior feel and improved adjustability. The wood provides a more comfortable grip, and the adjustability features allow for a truly customized fit, something that was lacking with my previous stock.
