Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Rifle Stock At One Winchester 70 No Floor Plate Long Action FBC Review

Let’s Talk About Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Rifle Stock At One Winchester 70 No Floor Plate Long Action FBC

The Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Rifle Stock At One Winchester 70 No Floor Plate Long Action FBC represents a modern take on a classic rifle stock. Made by Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks, this stock offers enhanced adjustability and a unique aesthetic. Its laminated hardwood construction and factory barrel channel (FBC) ensure both durability and compatibility with Winchester 70 long action rifles lacking a floor plate.

I’ve been rebuilding my grandfather’s old Winchester 70, which had a cracked and weathered stock. I needed a replacement that not only honored the rifle’s legacy but also provided modern ergonomic improvements. The Boyds At-One caught my eye with its promise of adjustability and the classic look of laminated hardwood.

Upon unboxing, I was immediately impressed by the heft and solidity of the stock. The Applejack laminate finish is visually stunning, and the wood felt dense and well-sealed. The adjustable comb and length-of-pull mechanisms felt robust and moved smoothly, hinting at quality craftsmanship.

I considered a few other options, including a synthetic stock from McMillan and a traditional walnut stock from Brownells. Ultimately, I chose the Boyds for its combination of adjustability, classic aesthetics, and relatively affordable price point. The synthetic option felt too modern for my restoration project, and the walnut option lacked the adjustability I desired.

My first impression was one of excitement; the stock exuded quality and seemed like the perfect blend of classic and modern features. I was eager to mount it on my action and see how it performed at the range. I hoped it would live up to the promise of improved ergonomics and accuracy.

Real-World Testing: Putting Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Rifle Stock At One Winchester 70 No Floor Plate Long Action FBC to the Test

First Use Experience

My initial testing occurred at my local outdoor range. I mounted the Boyds stock on my Winchester 70 long action and zeroed the rifle at 100 yards. The weather was clear and mild, providing ideal shooting conditions.

The adjustable comb and length-of-pull made a significant difference in my shooting comfort. I was able to quickly dial in the perfect cheek weld and eye relief for my scope. The improved ergonomics translated directly into tighter groupings on the target.

The only initial issue was a slight bit of tightness around the action screw pillars. This was easily remedied by some minor sanding of the wood in that area, and it was a good sign that it was intentionally over-sized for a tighter fit.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of regular use, the Boyds stock has proven to be exceptionally durable. I’ve taken the rifle on several hunting trips in various weather conditions. The laminate finish has held up beautifully against scratches and moisture.

There are no signs of cracking or warping, and the adjustable mechanisms remain smooth and reliable. I’ve also found that the stock is relatively easy to clean with a damp cloth and a mild wood cleaner. The finish resists dirt and grime effectively.

Compared to the original factory stock, the Boyds stock offers a far superior shooting experience. The adjustability allows for a much more comfortable and consistent cheek weld, which translates directly to improved accuracy. I’m thoroughly impressed with its performance and durability.
