Let’s Talk About Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Enfield P-17 Flat Floor Plate Left Hand Stock Right Hand Action #1 Barrel channel
The Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Enfield P-17 Flat Floor Plate Left Hand Stock Right Hand Action #1 Barrel channel is a meticulously crafted replacement stock designed to breathe new life into the venerable Enfield P-17 rifle. Specifically tailored for left-handed shooters using a right-hand action, this stock combines classic aesthetics with modern manufacturing techniques to deliver a product that is both beautiful and functional. This particular model accommodates a flat floor plate and is designed with a #1 barrel channel, making it a precise fit for specific P-17 configurations.
I’ve always appreciated the historical significance and inherent accuracy of the Enfield P-17, but finding a comfortable and well-fitting stock for my left-handed shooting style has been a challenge. Factory stocks often lack the ergonomic features necessary for optimal performance, and custom options can be prohibitively expensive. The promise of a quality hardwood stock, specifically designed for my needs, at a reasonable price point is what initially drew me to the Boyds offering.
Upon unboxing the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Enfield P-17 Flat Floor Plate Left Hand Stock Right Hand Action #1 Barrel channel, I was immediately impressed with the quality of the wood and the overall finish. The stock felt solid and well-balanced in my hands, with a pleasing heft that speaks to its durability. The grain pattern was attractive, and the semi-gloss finish enhanced the natural beauty of the hardwood.
Compared to other aftermarket stocks I’ve considered, such as synthetic options from Brownells or more expensive custom-made stocks from specialized gunsmiths, the Boyds stock offered a compelling balance of price, aesthetics, and functionality. While synthetic stocks boast weather resistance, they often lack the classic appeal and natural feel of wood. Custom stocks, while offering unparalleled fit and finish, can easily cost several times more than the Boyds offering. Ultimately, I chose the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Enfield P-17 Flat Floor Plate Left Hand Stock Right Hand Action #1 Barrel channel for its promise of a comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and affordable upgrade to my P-17.
My first impression was one of cautious optimism, combined with a healthy dose of excitement. While I was impressed with the initial visual inspection, the true test would be in the fit and feel once installed on my rifle, and how it would perform on the range. Would it truly improve my shooting experience, or would it just be another cosmetic upgrade?
Real-World Testing: Putting Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Enfield P-17 Flat Floor Plate Left Hand Stock Right Hand Action #1 Barrel channel to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Enfield P-17 Flat Floor Plate Left Hand Stock Right Hand Action #1 Barrel channel at my local shooting range, focusing on both accuracy and comfort. The weather was clear and dry, providing ideal conditions for evaluating the stock’s performance. I ran several boxes of .30-06 ammunition through my P-17, paying close attention to how the stock affected my grip, cheek weld, and overall shooting experience.
The immediate improvement was noticeable. The left-handed design provided a much more natural and comfortable grip compared to the original stock. The cheek weld felt secure and consistent, allowing for quicker and more accurate target acquisition. Recoil felt slightly reduced, likely due to the better fit and increased surface area in contact with my shoulder. There were no issues with the fit of the action within the stock; it was snug and required minimal bedding.
After the first range session, I was thoroughly impressed with the Boyds stock. It transformed my P-17 from a historically interesting but somewhat unwieldy rifle into a comfortable and accurate shooter. However, I was also curious to see how it would hold up over time with extended use and exposure to the elements.

The stock has remained stable and secure, with no noticeable shifting or loosening of the action. I’ve cleaned and oiled it regularly with a high-quality wood preservative, which has helped to maintain its finish and prevent cracking or warping.
Compared to my previous experiences with factory stocks, the Boyds stock is a significant improvement in both comfort and durability. It has consistently outperformed my expectations, providing a stable and comfortable shooting platform that has enhanced my accuracy and overall shooting enjoyment.
