Let’s Talk About Bone Collector Cadiz Hen Compact Turkey Box Call
The Bone Collector Cadiz Hen Compact Turkey Box Call promises big sound in a small package, a tempting proposition for any turkey hunter. Designed by Bone Collector, this call aims to replicate realistic hen sounds with its unique wood combination. This review dives deep into whether the Cadiz Hen lives up to the hype.
As a seasoned turkey hunter, I’m always on the lookout for a compact and reliable call. Over the years, I’ve tried countless calls, from slate and diaphragm to elaborate pot calls. But I was searching for a box call that wouldn’t take up too much space in my vest but still deliver a convincing sound.
Upon receiving the Bone Collector Cadiz Hen Compact Turkey Box Call, I was immediately struck by its size. It’s noticeably smaller than my other box calls, easily fitting in the palm of my hand. The combination of cherry, walnut, and poplar woods creates an appealing aesthetic.
I considered the Primos Heart Breaker Box Call and the Quaker Boy Easy Yelper before settling on the Cadiz Hen. I ultimately chose the Cadiz Hen because of its compact size and the promise of a diverse tonal range due to the multi-wood construction. I was eager to test if it could truly produce both soft purrs and loud yelps as claimed.
My first impression was a mix of excitement and cautious optimism. The call felt well-made, but the proof would be in the sound. I couldn’t wait to get into the woods and see how the turkeys reacted to it.
Real-World Testing: Putting Bone Collector Cadiz Hen Compact Turkey Box Call to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Bone Collector Cadiz Hen Compact Turkey Box Call during the spring turkey season in the dense oak and hickory forests of Missouri. The morning was crisp and cool, with a light fog hanging in the air. These conditions are ideal for sound travel.
The call performed admirably in the damp conditions. The chalk held well, and the sound didn’t seem to be affected by the moisture. I found it relatively easy to produce yelps and clucks, but mastering the purrs took a little practice.
Initially, I had some trouble getting the right amount of pressure on the paddle to produce consistent purrs. It required a delicate touch, and I occasionally squeaked unintentionally. However, after about an hour of practice, I started to get the hang of it and began producing realistic-sounding purrs.
Extended Use & Reliability
After a full season of use, the Bone Collector Cadiz Hen Compact Turkey Box Call has proven to be a reliable addition to my turkey hunting arsenal. It has held up remarkably well to the rigors of the hunt. It has seen everything from early morning dew to light rain without any noticeable degradation in sound quality.
There are only minor signs of wear, mostly scuffs on the finish from rubbing against other gear in my vest. The call is easy to clean. A simple wipe down with a dry cloth after each hunt is usually sufficient.
Compared to my older, larger box call, the Cadiz Hen offers comparable sound quality in a much more convenient package. The Cadiz Hen exceeded my expectations in terms of portability and overall sound quality, making it a reliable and go-to option. This has become my go-to choice for hunts where space and weight are critical.
