First Impressions of Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster
The Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster promises a blend of speed, security, and adaptability for Tanfoglio pistol owners. I’ve spent over a decade working with tactical and outdoor gear, and a reliable holster is paramount for both professional and recreational use. This holster boasts a quick-release system, 360-degree cant adjustability, and compatibility with optics and raised sights, making it a strong contender for anyone seeking a versatile OWB (Outside the Waistband) option.
My search for this holster began with a specific need: a secure and rapidly accessible OWB holster for my Tanfoglio Witness Elite Limited 9mm. I wanted a holster that wouldn’t break the bank but could withstand the rigors of range training and potentially even competition use. I was tired of the flimsy nylon holsters that lacked retention and adjustability.
Upon unboxing, the Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster presents a clean, functional design. The Kydex construction feels robust, and the paddle attachment seems secure. Compared to some other budget-friendly holsters I’ve used, the finish is noticeably better, with smooth edges and well-defined molding.
I considered options from Safariland and Blade-Tech, both reputable brands, but their offerings for the Tanfoglio platform were significantly more expensive. The Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster seemed to offer a compelling balance of features and affordability. My initial impression is cautiously optimistic – it appears to be a well-made holster that addresses my specific needs, but real-world testing will be the ultimate judge.
Real-World Testing: Putting Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing took place at my local shooting range. I ran several drills focusing on drawing and re-holstering, as well as moving and shooting. The Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster performed admirably.
The quick-release system proved intuitive and efficient, allowing for rapid detachment of the holster from the paddle when needed. I also tested it during a light rain shower; the Kydex retained its rigidity and didn’t become slippery. I did have to adjust the retention screw slightly to achieve my preferred draw resistance, but that was easily done with a screwdriver.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster has held up remarkably well. There are a few minor scratches on the surface from rubbing against gear, but the holster itself remains structurally sound. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth has been sufficient to maintain its appearance and function.
The paddle attachment continues to grip my belt securely, and the retention hasn’t loosened over time. Compared to a previous leather holster I owned, which became soft and pliable with use, the Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster maintains its shape and rigidity, ensuring consistent performance. The Kydex shows no signs of cracking or warping.
Breaking Down the Features of Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster
Specifications
The Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster boasts several key specifications that contribute to its functionality:
- Material: Constructed from .08” Kydex, providing a rigid and durable platform. This thickness offers a good balance between strength and weight.
- Hand Orientation: Available in right-hand configuration. This is a crucial factor to consider during purchase.
- Gun Make: Specifically molded for Tanfoglio pistols. It’s essential to ensure compatibility with your specific Tanfoglio model.
- Holster Type: Outside the Waistband (OWB) holster. This offers a comfortable carry position, especially for larger firearms.
- Attachment System: Paddle attachment for belts up to 2 1/4” wide. This provides a secure and adjustable fit.
- Adjustability: Offers 360-degree ‘cant’ adjustability. This allows users to customize the draw angle for optimal comfort and speed.
These specifications translate to a holster that’s both durable and customizable, allowing users to tailor it to their individual needs and preferences. The Kydex construction ensures long-lasting performance, while the adjustability features enhance comfort and usability.
Performance & Functionality
The Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster performs its primary function – securely holding a Tanfoglio pistol – exceptionally well. The retention is adjustable, allowing users to fine-tune the draw resistance to their preference. The quick-release system is a standout feature, enabling rapid detachment of the holster from the paddle without tools.
The holster’s optimized competition cut allows for fast and efficient draws. It easily accommodates slide-mounted optics, which is a significant advantage for those who run red dots or other aiming devices. The raised sight channel also ensures compatibility with aftermarket raised sights.
However, the paddle attachment might not be ideal for concealed carry, as it adds bulk and can be difficult to conceal under clothing. The quick-release button can be a bit stiff initially, requiring some practice to operate smoothly. Overall, the holster meets and exceeds expectations for a mid-range OWB option.
Design & Ergonomics
The Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster is designed with functionality and ergonomics in mind. The Kydex molding is precise, providing a snug and secure fit for the Tanfoglio pistol. The paddle attachment is comfortable against the body, even during extended wear.
The holster is relatively lightweight, considering its robust construction. The 360-degree cant adjustability allows users to find the optimal draw angle for their body type and shooting style. The open muzzle design also accommodates threaded barrels, expanding the holster’s compatibility.
However, the paddle design may not be suitable for all body types, and some users may find it less comfortable than other attachment methods. There is a slight learning curve associated with the quick-release system, but with practice, it becomes second nature. The holster is generally user-friendly and intuitive.
Durability & Maintenance
The Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster is built to last. The .08” Kydex construction is highly resistant to wear and tear, and the paddle attachment is securely fastened. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth is all that’s needed to maintain its appearance and function.
The holster’s simple design minimizes the risk of mechanical failure. The Kydex is resistant to solvents and chemicals, making it easy to clean without damaging the material. With proper care, this holster should provide years of reliable service.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear Tanfoglio OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster is primarily designed as a standalone holster, but it offers some limited customization options. The cant angle is adjustable, allowing users to fine-tune the draw angle. The retention is also adjustable, allowing users to customize the draw resistance.
The holster is compatible with slide-mounted optics and raised sights. The open muzzle design allows for the use of threaded barrels. While the holster doesn’t come with a wide range of accessories, its compatibility with various Tanfoglio models and aftermarket parts makes it a versatile choice. There aren’t specific Black Scorpion accessories designed for it, but standard belt attachments could potentially be swapped with the paddle if desired, though this may void any warranty.
