There’s a primal satisfaction in hearing that ping of steel. This 6-inch gong, constructed from 3/8″ AR500 steel, is designed to withstand the impact of centerfire rifles and handguns, making it a versatile addition to any shooter’s range setup.
My journey to this particular steel target started with frustration. I was tired of paper targets that ripped and required constant replacement, especially during windy days at the range. I wanted something that could handle the repeated impact of centerfire rounds and provide immediate feedback, without the hassle of constantly taping up holes.
Upon unboxing the Birchwood Casey steel gong, I was immediately impressed by its robust construction. The steel felt substantial, and the orange and black color scheme provided good visibility. Its relatively compact size and two-hole design suggested easy portability and setup.
I considered other options, including larger steel targets and those with more elaborate mounting systems. However, the Birchwood Casey gong stood out due to its balance of size, durability, and price. It seemed like the perfect entry point into the world of steel targets, offering a convenient and cost-effective way to enhance my shooting practice.
My initial impression was one of cautious optimism. I was excited to finally have a durable and reactive target, but also a bit skeptical about whether a 6-inch gong could truly handle the abuse I planned to put it through. Real-World Testing: Putting Birchwood Casey 47608 World Of Targets 6″ Two Hole AR500 Steel Gong to the Test
First Use Experience
My first experience with the Birchwood Casey steel gong was at my local outdoor shooting range. I set it up at 100 yards, suspending it from a sturdy target stand using chains through the two pre-drilled holes. I was eager to see how it performed with my AR-15.
The weather was dry and sunny, ideal for shooting. The gong rang out with a satisfying ping with each hit. It was instantly clear how much more rewarding this was compared to shooting paper.
Using my 9mm pistol at 25 yards was equally satisfying. The gong provided instant feedback and the slight movement upon impact was very helpful. There were no issues after the first session; it was easy to use right out of the box.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Birchwood Casey gong has held up remarkably well. The AR500 steel shows no signs of deformation or cracking, despite taking hundreds of rounds from various centerfire rifles and pistols. The paint, however, has taken a beating, showing significant chipping and wear, but this is purely cosmetic.
Maintaining the gong is incredibly simple. I just occasionally wipe it down with a cloth to remove any residue. It is important to remember to avoid using steel core ammunition to maximize the target’s lifespan.
Compared to my previous experiences with paper targets, the Birchwood Casey steel gong is a game-changer. It’s far more durable, provides instant feedback, and requires virtually no maintenance. It has definitely exceeded my expectations, making my range sessions more enjoyable and productive.
