The Barnes Vor-Tx 12 Gauge 3 in Expander Tipped Shotgun Slug Loads
20737 12% Off represent a commitment to accuracy and terminal performance in a shotgun slug. Manufactured by Barnes, these slugs are designed for hunters seeking reliable knockdown power at reasonable ranges. I was looking for a slug that could deliver consistent accuracy and a humane kill for deer hunting in thick brush, where longer rifle shots are impossible.
Unboxing the Barnes Vor-Tx, the first thing I noticed was the quality of the packaging and the clean, consistent look of the ammunition itself. The polymer tip and all-copper construction spoke to a focus on both expansion and penetration. Compared to traditional lead slugs, which I’ve used for years, the lead-free design of the Barnes Vor-Tx was a significant selling point, both for ethical hunting and reducing lead exposure. I had also considered the Hornady SST slugs, known for their accuracy, and the Federal Trophy Copper slugs, but the Barnes seemed to offer a balance of performance and value.
My initial impression was one of cautious optimism. I was excited about the potential for improved accuracy and terminal performance, but also aware that premium slugs can sometimes be finicky in different shotguns. Time at the range would be the ultimate test.

First Use Experience
I first tested the Barnes Vor-Tx 12 Gauge 3 in Expander Tipped Shotgun Slug Loads
20737 12% Off at my local shooting range, using a scoped, rifled-barrel shotgun. The weather was mild and dry, providing ideal conditions for testing. The slugs were easy to load and chamber, and the recoil felt manageable, similar to other 3-inch magnum loads.
The accuracy was immediately impressive. At 50 yards, I was consistently grouping within 2-3 inches, which is significantly better than I’ve achieved with traditional lead slugs in the same shotgun. There were no issues with cycling or feeding, and every slug fired reliably.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of practice and fine-tuning my zero, I took the Barnes Vor-Tx into the field for deer season. Throughout the season, I fired about 20 rounds in practice and three rounds at game. The slugs performed flawlessly, delivering consistent accuracy and devastating terminal performance.
There were no signs of significant wear and tear on the ammunition itself. The polymer tips remained intact, and the brass casings ejected cleanly. While shotgun ammunition doesn’t require extensive maintenance, I always wipe down the exterior of the shells after use to remove any moisture or debris. The Barnes Vor-Tx significantly outperformed the lead slugs I had used in the past in terms of accuracy and consistent expansion.
