First Impressions of Apex Ammunition Predator TSS 12 Gauge 2 oz 3” BB Shotgun Ammunition PK3-2BB 22% Off
The Apex Ammunition Predator TSS 12 Gauge 2 oz 3” BB Shotgun Ammunition PK3-2BB 22% Off promises a significant advantage in the field for predator, hog, and even deer hunting. Boasting Tungsten Super Shot (TSS), this ammunition aims to deliver superior density, pattern retention, and knockdown power compared to traditional lead shotshells. Apex Ammunition has a reputation for high-quality, specialized ammunition, and this offering seems to target experienced hunters seeking maximum performance.
I was struggling to find a shotshell that delivered consistent, tight patterns at longer ranges when targeting coyotes. Typical lead loads were losing effectiveness beyond 40 yards, leading to misses and wounded animals. I hoped the Apex Ammunition Predator TSS would extend my effective range and provide more humane kills.
The packaging is straightforward, a simple box containing the five 3-inch shells. Upon opening, the shells themselves look meticulously crafted with a clean, consistent crimp. They feel noticeably heavier than typical lead loads, a testament to the denser tungsten shot.
I considered the Federal Premium Vital-Shok Turkey Loads with Flitecontrol and the Winchester Long Beard XR Turkey Loads, both known for tight patterns at distance. However, these are primarily designed for turkey and utilize smaller shot sizes. The Apex Ammunition Predator TSS specifically uses BB shot and is marketed for larger game, offering what seemed to be a better balance of pattern density and penetration for predators and hogs.
My initial impression is one of cautious optimism. The price point is significantly higher than standard loads, but if the performance lives up to the claims, it will be a worthwhile investment. I’m eager to see how the Apex Ammunition Predator TSS patterns in my shotgun and performs in the field.
Real-World Testing: Putting Apex Ammunition Predator TSS 12 Gauge 2 oz 3” BB Shotgun Ammunition PK3-2BB 22% Off to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Apex Ammunition Predator TSS at my usual shooting range, using a Benelli Super Black Eagle II with a Carlson’s Dead Coyote choke tube. The weather was cool and clear, providing ideal conditions for evaluating pattern performance. The initial shot produced a noticeable increase in recoil compared to standard 2 3/4-inch lead loads.
The patterns at 40 yards were significantly tighter and more uniform than anything I had achieved with lead BB loads. There were no noticeable holes or flyers, and the majority of the shot clustered within a 20-inch circle. After the first shot, I noticed slightly more fouling in the barrel, though easily cleaned later.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use on predator hunts, the Apex Ammunition Predator TSS continues to impress. I’ve taken multiple coyotes at distances ranging from 40 to 60 yards, with clean, ethical kills. The ammunition has proven reliable, with no misfires or malfunctions.
There are no significant signs of wear or tear on my shotgun, even after firing dozens of rounds. Cleaning and maintenance are straightforward, requiring only standard bore cleaning procedures. Compared to my previous experiences with lead loads, the Apex Ammunition Predator TSS provides a noticeable increase in effective range and confidence in shot placement.
Breaking Down the Features of Apex Ammunition Predator TSS 12 Gauge 2 oz 3” BB Shotgun Ammunition PK3-2BB 22% Off
Specifications
The Apex Ammunition Predator TSS 12 Gauge 2 oz 3” BB Shotgun Ammunition PK3-2BB 22% Off is a specialized shotshell designed for predator and hog hunting. It features a 12 gauge chambering in a 3-inch shell length. Each shell contains 2 ounces of BB size Tungsten Super Shot (TSS).
The muzzle velocity is rated at 1200 ft/s, providing ample energy for downrange performance. It is loaded with a centerfire primer and housed in a plastic cartridge case. The shot material is tungsten, making it lead-free and environmentally conscious. These specifications combined contribute to the ammunition’s key advantage: exceptional density and pattern control at extended ranges.
Performance & Functionality
The Apex Ammunition Predator TSS excels in its intended role. Its dense tungsten shot retains energy and delivers deep penetration, resulting in quick, humane kills. The tighter patterns ensure more consistent hits at longer ranges, significantly improving hunting success.
The primary strength lies in its ability to extend the effective range of a shotgun for predator hunting. The cost is a weakness, as it’s significantly more expensive than traditional lead loads. Overall, the Apex Ammunition Predator TSS exceeds expectations for hunters demanding maximum performance.
Design & Ergonomics
The design of the Apex Ammunition Predator TSS prioritizes function over aesthetics. The plastic cartridge case is standard, and the tungsten shot has a uniform appearance. The heavier weight, due to the dense tungsten, is noticeable, adding to recoil but also conveying a sense of quality.
There is no learning curve; it functions like any other shotshell.
Durability & Maintenance
The Apex Ammunition Predator TSS itself is a consumable, so durability is not a primary concern. However, the high-quality components and construction suggest reliable performance. The ammunition does not require any special maintenance.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Apex Ammunition Predator TSS does not have any specific accessories designed for it. However, the performance can be optimized with aftermarket choke tubes designed for tight patterns, like those from Carlson’s or Patternmaster. It is compatible with any 12-gauge shotgun chambered for 3-inch shells.
