First Thoughts on the AERO M5 UPPER 308 Win 16″ Black
The AERO M5 UPPER 308 Win 16″ Black from Aero Precision is a complete upper receiver chambered in the potent .308 Winchester cartridge. It boasts a 16-inch barrel, rifle-length gas system, and the sleek ATLAS S-ONE handguard. This upper promises to be a solid foundation for a reliable and accurate AR-10 build, piquing the interest of both seasoned AR enthusiasts and those looking to enter the .308 platform.
I’ve been looking for a .308 AR upper that balances portability with long-range capability for some time now. My old .308 was a boat anchor, and I needed something I could actually maneuver in the field while hunting hogs in Texas. This upper seemed to offer that sweet spot, and the reputation of Aero Precision for quality components sealed the deal.
The AERO M5 UPPER 308 Win 16″ Black arrived well-packaged. My first impression was that it looked and felt solid. The anodized finish was even and clean, and the handguard felt remarkably sturdy, lending an air of quality to the entire unit.
I considered options from Palmetto State Armory and DPMS, but ultimately went with Aero Precision. Their commitment to quality and the reputation of the M5 platform swayed me. The others felt “budget,” whereas the M5 gave off a sense of refined capability.
Initial excitement is high with the AERO M5 UPPER 308 Win 16″ Black. It seems like a well-built, versatile upper that could serve a multitude of roles. I’m eager to see how it performs at the range and in the field.
Real-World Testing: Putting AERO M5 UPPER 308 Win 16″ Black to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the AERO M5 UPPER 308 Win 16″ Black at my local range. I mounted it on an Aero Precision M5 lower and paired it with a quality .308 BCG and charging handle. I wanted to get a feel for the accuracy potential of this setup.
The weather was sunny, around 75 degrees Fahrenheit, with a slight breeze. The upper performed admirably. I was consistently hitting steel targets at 300 yards after getting it sighted in, and even managed some hits at 500 with quality match ammo.
The rifle-length gas system made for a smoother shooting experience than I expected for a .308. There were no malfunctions with either the Federal Gold Medal Match ammo or the cheaper surplus ammo I ran through it. The recoil was manageable and predictable.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use, the AERO M5 UPPER 308 Win 16″ Black has proven to be reliable and durable. I’ve put several hundred rounds through it, and it continues to perform flawlessly. The finish shows no signs of wear, even after being bumped around in my truck and rifle case.
The anodized finish remains pristine, even after exposure to mud and rain on a recent hog hunt. Cleaning is straightforward, requiring just a standard AR cleaning kit and some CLP. I typically clean it after every range trip or hunting session.
Compared to my old AR-10, the AERO M5 UPPER 308 Win 16″ Black is a significant upgrade. It is more accurate, more reliable, and significantly lighter, making it much more pleasant to carry in the field. The consistency and durability have genuinely impressed me.
