The Adjustable Rear Sight & Front Sight Set for Tactical Shotguns – Compatible with Rock Island Armory 116 12GA Made a Bold First Impression
The Adjustable Rear Sight & Front Sight Set for Tactical Shotguns – Compatible with Rock Island Armory 116 12GA promises a significant upgrade to the accuracy of your tactical shotgun. Coming in at an accessible price point, I was keen to see if it lived up to the claims of enhanced precision and easy installation. As someone who’s spent over a decade tinkering with and training with various tactical firearms, my interest was immediately piqued.
My primary motivation for seeking out this sight set was the notoriously basic sighting system that often comes stock on budget-friendly tactical shotguns like the Rock Island Armory 116. The original bead sight is fine for close-quarters encounters, but struggles immensely at any sort of extended range. I was hoping for a more precise aiming solution that wouldn’t break the bank or require extensive gunsmithing.
The sight set arrived in simple, no-frills packaging. The first thing I noticed was the seemingly robust construction of both the front and rear sights. They felt surprisingly solid for the price, made of what appears to be a durable, if not particularly high-end, metal. My initial impression was cautiously optimistic: they looked the part of a significant upgrade.
I considered options from XS Sights and Truglo, both well-known for shotgun sighting systems. I opted for this particular set due to its combination of adjustability and affordability, alongside the promise of easy, tool-free installation. The others, while potentially offering superior materials or tritium illumination, came at a significantly higher cost and, in some cases, required professional installation.
My first impression was a mix of excitement and mild skepticism. I was eager to install the set and see how it performed, but the low price made me wonder about long-term durability and the quality of the adjustments. Only a range trip would truly tell.
Real-World Testing: Putting Adjustable Rear Sight & Front Sight Set for Tactical Shotguns – Compatible with Rock Island Armory 116 12GA to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Adjustable Rear Sight & Front Sight Set for Tactical Shotguns – Compatible with Rock Island Armory 116 12GA at my local outdoor shooting range. The range offered a variety of distances, allowing me to evaluate the sight set’s performance at both close quarters and more extended ranges. I primarily used 00 buckshot and slugs during my initial testing.
The weather was clear and dry, offering optimal visibility. Installation, as promised, was remarkably straightforward. I was able to swap out the original bead sight and attach the new set in under ten minutes using only my hands.
The immediate difference was noticeable. The adjustable rear sight allowed for a much more refined sight picture compared to the simple bead. I did find that the front sight, while adequately bright, could benefit from a fiber optic insert for even faster target acquisition. After a few rounds, I did need to adjust the rear sight slightly to compensate for the slug’s impact point.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of regular use, the Adjustable Rear Sight & Front Sight Set for Tactical Shotguns – Compatible with Rock Island Armory 116 12GA has proven to be a reliable addition to my shotgun. There are no significant signs of wear and tear despite exposure to typical range conditions and cleaning solvents. The adjustment screws on the rear sight remain firm and haven’t loosened with repeated firing.
I’ve put roughly 500 rounds through the shotgun since installing the sight set, including a mix of birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. The sights have held their zero consistently, requiring only minor adjustments after the initial setup. Cleaning is simple, requiring only a quick wipe-down with a cloth and some solvent to remove powder residue.
Compared to my previous experience with the stock bead sight, this sight set is a significant improvement. It allows for much greater precision, particularly when using slugs at longer distances. The adjustability is a game-changer, enabling me to fine-tune the point of impact for different loads.
