Let’s Dive into Abu Garcia 7000/701MH AMB 7000 7FT MH COMBO 1324605
The Abu Garcia 7000/701MH AMB 7000 7FT MH COMBO 1324605 is a classic baitcasting combo designed for anglers targeting larger species, be it in freshwater or saltwater environments. Manufactured by Abu Garcia, this combo combines the renowned 7000 series reel with a 7-foot medium-heavy power rod. Its robust construction and powerful drag system make it a strong contender for battling fish like catfish, salmon, and even smaller inshore saltwater species.
As someone with over a decade in the outdoor gear industry, I’ve always sought equipment that balances durability with performance. I specifically needed a combo for targeting larger catfish in rivers and lakes, where gear failure simply isn’t an option. I was drawn to the Abu Garcia 7000/701MH AMB 7000 7FT MH COMBO 1324605 because of Abu Garcia’s reputation for building reels that can withstand serious abuse.
Unboxing the combo, my initial impression was that of a workhorse – no frills, just solid construction. The reel felt hefty and well-built, and the rod, while not a graphite featherweight, had a reassuringly sturdy feel to it. The materials appeared durable and ready to take on the challenges of hard-fighting fish.
Compared to some other baitcasting combos in the same price range, like the Shimano Catana/Casting Rod Combo or the Daiwa D-Wave Saltwater Combo, the Abu Garcia combo felt more robust. While the Shimano and Daiwa combos might offer slightly smoother retrieves, the Abu Garcia combo seemed better suited for handling heavier lines and bigger fish. Ultimately, I chose the Abu Garcia combo for its perceived durability and power, essential for my style of fishing.
My first impression was excitement tempered with a healthy dose of skepticism. While the combo looked promising, only time on the water would tell if it could truly live up to Abu Garcia’s reputation.
Real-World Testing: Putting Abu Garcia 7000/701MH AMB 7000 7FT MH COMBO 1324605 to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing ground for the Abu Garcia 7000/701MH AMB 7000 7FT MH COMBO 1324605 was the muddy banks of the Mississippi River, targeting hefty channel catfish. Conditions were far from ideal – a steady drizzle, combined with the usual riverbank grime, provided a good test of the combo’s resilience. I fished with heavy weights and large cut bait, putting the rod and reel under significant strain.
The combo performed admirably, casting heavy rigs with surprising ease, and the multi-disc drag system provided smooth, consistent pressure when hooked up with a decent-sized catfish. The reel felt solid, and the extended bend handle offered plenty of cranking power. There was a slight learning curve with the centrifugal brake system, but after a few casts, I found the sweet spot for preventing backlashes.
The only minor issue I encountered was that the EVA handle on the rod became a bit slippery when wet. However, this was easily remedied by wearing fishing gloves.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Abu Garcia 7000/701MH AMB 7000 7FT MH COMBO 1324605 has proven to be a reliable and durable workhorse. Despite being subjected to muddy riverbanks, saltwater spray, and the occasional accidental drop, the combo shows minimal signs of wear and tear. I have used it in conditions ranging from scorching summer heat to near-freezing winter temperatures.
The Duragear brass main gear continues to perform smoothly, and the corrosion-resistant instant anti-reverse bearing has held up well against saltwater exposure. Cleaning and maintenance are straightforward. A simple rinse with freshwater after each use, followed by occasional lubrication of the reel, has kept the combo in top condition.
Compared to my previous baitcasting setup, a significantly more expensive Shimano Curado reel paired with a St. Croix rod, the Abu Garcia combo holds its own surprisingly well. While the Shimano combo offers a more refined feel and slightly better sensitivity, the Abu Garcia combo provides comparable performance and arguably superior durability at a fraction of the price.
