As an experienced angler always looking for an edge, I was drawn to these harnesses by their combination of visual and vibrational appeal. I have seen some success with standard crawler harnesses, but I hoped the glow-in-the-dark UV beads and the enhanced blade thump would give me an advantage in low-light or stained-water conditions.
Upon receiving the Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness, my initial impression was positive. The materials felt durable, and the color combinations were eye-catching. The glow effect of the UV beads was immediately apparent, even in normal lighting. Real-World Testing: Putting Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness to the Test
First Use Experience
My first opportunity to test the Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness came during a walleye trip to Lake Erie in late August. The conditions were challenging, with slightly stained water and overcast skies. I trolled the harnesses behind bottom bouncers at depths ranging from 15 to 25 feet.
The action was slow initially, but after switching to the Slug Bug harnesses, we started to see more activity. The Premium #4 Colorado blades created a noticeable thump, even at slower trolling speeds. The GLOW In the Dark UV Beads & Paint seemed to attract fish in the murky conditions, and we ended up landing several decent-sized walleye.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of using the Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness on various lakes and rivers, I can confidently say they are a reliable and effective walleye presentation. The harnesses have held up well to repeated use, showing no significant signs of wear and tear. The 14 lb Mono Leader has proven to be strong enough to handle larger fish without breaking, even when snagged on underwater structure.
Maintaining the harnesses is relatively simple: a quick rinse with fresh water after each use is usually sufficient. I do recommend checking the hooks regularly for sharpness and replacing them as needed. Overall, the Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness have outperformed many of the standard crawler harnesses I’ve used in the past, especially in low-light or stained-water conditions.
Breaking Down the Features of Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness
Specifications
The Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness boasts several key specifications that contribute to its effectiveness:
- Premium #4 Colorado Blades: These blades create an optimal thump and vibration in the water, attracting walleye from a distance. The size and shape are ideal for generating flash and disturbance.
- GLOW In the Dark UV Beads & Paint: These features enhance visibility in low-light or stained-water conditions, making the harness more attractive to walleye. The UV paint adds an extra layer of attraction.
- Industry Standard 48″ Long 14 lb Mono Leader: This provides ample length for presenting the bait naturally and the strength to handle larger fish. The monofilament leader is also relatively invisible in the water.
- RED #2 Hooks: The red color adds extra flash and triggers strikes. Size #2 hooks are a good balance of holding power and ease of hooking.
These specifications combine to create a harness that is both visually appealing and effective at attracting walleye. The quality of the components ensures that the harnesses will hold up to repeated use and challenging fishing conditions.
Performance & Functionality
The Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness performs its job exceptionally well, especially in conditions where visibility is limited. The glow-in-the-dark beads and vibrant colors are highly effective at attracting walleye, even in stained water. The thump of the Colorado blade creates an auditory cue that further entices fish to strike.
The harnesses are generally easy to use, requiring minimal adjustments or modifications. The main strength lies in their ability to consistently produce bites, even when other presentations fail. The main weakness might be that in ultra-clear water, the bright colors and glow could potentially spook fish, warranting a switch to more natural presentations. Overall, these harnesses meet and exceed expectations for attracting walleye in a variety of conditions.
Design & Ergonomics
The build quality of the Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness is impressive for the price point. The materials used are durable and well-assembled. The weight of the harness is balanced, allowing it to track well in the water without excessive drag.
The design is user-friendly, with no complicated rigging or adjustments required. The harnesses are ready to fish right out of the package.
Durability & Maintenance
With proper care, the Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness should last for multiple seasons of fishing. The components are relatively resistant to corrosion, and the leader material is strong enough to withstand abrasion from rocks and other underwater structure.
Maintenance is simple: rinsing with fresh water after each use is sufficient to prevent corrosion and maintain the glow-in-the-dark properties of the beads. Replacing the hooks periodically will ensure optimal hooking performance.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Vexan Slug Bug Ten 2-Packs Glow Walleye Crawler Harness comes ready to use straight out of the package and doesn’t require any additional accessories to be effective. However, anglers can easily customize them to suit their specific preferences.
Swapping out the Colorado blade for a different style (e.g., willow leaf or Indiana blade) can alter the action of the harness. Adding a small swivel or bead ahead of the harness can help prevent line twist. The RED #2 Hooks could be replaced with different sizes or styles depending on the size of the crawler being used.
