The NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan Made a Bold First Impression
The NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan isn’t just another accessory; it’s a versatile piece of kit designed to keep your shotgun shells readily accessible while offering a convenient carry method. Manufactured by NcStar, this bandolier/sling combo aims to provide both functionality and comfort. This combo promises to be a useful addition to any shotgun enthusiast’s gear collection.
My need for this product stemmed from a recurring issue during clay shooting. Constantly fumbling for shells in my vest pockets was slowing me down and disrupting my focus. I needed a solution that allowed for quick and easy access to my ammunition, without hindering my movement.
Upon unboxing, the first thing I noticed was the tan color, a practical choice for blending in with various outdoor environments. The nylon seat belt type material felt robust, suggesting a durable construction. The removable padded sections were a welcome sight, promising increased comfort during extended use.
I considered other options, like individual shell holders that attach directly to the shotgun, but they lacked the carrying capability I desired. A traditional shotgun sling alone wouldn’t solve the ammunition access issue. The NcStar combo seemed to offer the best of both worlds.
Initially, I was cautiously optimistic. The price point was undeniably attractive, raising some questions about the overall quality. However, the advertised features seemed promising, and I was eager to see how it performed in real-world scenarios.
Real-World Testing: Putting NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan at my local shooting range during a sporting clays session. The weather was dry and mild, perfect for an initial evaluation. I immediately appreciated having 15 shells readily available right on my person.
The bandolier aspect proved invaluable for quick reloads between stations. The elastic bands held the shells securely, yet allowed for easy retrieval. The sling function, while initially feeling a little awkward, quickly became more comfortable as I adjusted the strap length.
One slight annoyance was the initial stiffness of the nylon material. It rubbed against my neck a bit, but I anticipated this would soften with use. Otherwise, the first outing was a success, and I was eager to see how it would perform over time.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use, including a dove hunting trip and multiple range sessions, the NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan has held up surprisingly well. The material has softened slightly, making it more comfortable to wear for extended periods. There are no significant signs of wear and tear.
The elastic loops still maintain a firm grip on the shotgun shells, preventing them from falling out even during rigorous movement. I’ve found that wiping it down with a damp cloth after each use keeps it clean and prevents dirt buildup. The bandolier portion functions far better than the previous shell pouch I used.
Compared to my previous experiences with separate slings and shell pouches, this combo is a definite improvement. It offers a more streamlined and convenient solution for carrying both my shotgun and ammunition. It’s not the highest-end piece of gear I own, but it certainly punches above its weight class.
Breaking Down the Features of NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan
Specifications
- The NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan holds 15 each 2″ & 3″ Shotshells in elastic bands. This is a crucial specification, dictating the carrying capacity of the bandolier.
- It features a removable padded cover that secures and protects the Shotshells in the elastic loops; a nice touch for added security. The removable padded cover attaches to Sling via hook and loop fasteners, making it easy to remove or attach.
- The barrel end of the sling has an elastic band section to absorb shock, providing comfort during long walks. This small addition makes a big difference when carrying the shotgun for extended periods.
- A pair of 1″ Sling Swivels is included for attachment to sling studs on the shotgun, offering flexible attachment options. Alternatively, the sling can attach directly to the sling loops on your shotgun.
- The bandolier/sling is Tan in color, made of PVC material, and measures 44.0 x 3.0 x 1.0 inches. The tan color is practical for various outdoor environments, and the dimensions dictate its overall size and shape.
- It weighs in at 9.7 ounces, keeping it lightweight and manageable. Weight is an important factor, especially when carrying it for extended periods.
Performance & Functionality
The NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan performs its primary function effectively: carrying shotgun shells and providing a sling for your firearm. The elastic loops securely hold the shells, allowing for quick and easy access during reloads. The sling allows for comfortable carry, distributing the weight of the shotgun across your shoulder.
However, the sling’s functionality is somewhat basic. It lacks advanced features like quick-release buckles or adjustable padding. Also, the sling swivels feel slightly flimsy, raising concerns about their long-term durability.
Overall, it meets expectations for its price point, but it’s not without its limitations. The bandolier function is excellent, while the sling could use some refinement.
Design & Ergonomics
The design is straightforward and functional, prioritizing practicality over aesthetics. The 2″ Wide Nylon Seat Belt type material feels sturdy, though not particularly comfortable against bare skin. The removable padded sections do improve comfort, but they could be thicker for optimal cushioning.
The bandolier section is well-designed, with the elastic loops positioned for easy shell access. The sling is adjustable, allowing for a customized fit. However, the overall design lacks some of the ergonomic refinements found in higher-end slings.
There is a slight learning curve to adjusting the sling length, but otherwise, it’s relatively user-friendly. The elastic shell holders are easy to load and unload.
Durability & Maintenance
The NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan appears to be reasonably durable, given its price point. The nylon material is resistant to tearing and abrasion. The stitching seems secure, and the elastic loops show no signs of over-stretching.
However, the sling swivels are the weak point in terms of durability. They are made of plastic and feel somewhat fragile. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient to maintain its appearance and functionality.
I expect it to last for several seasons of moderate use, but it’s not likely to withstand the rigors of heavy, daily use in extreme conditions. It’s easily maintained with the use of just a damp cloth.
Accessories and Customization Options
The NcStar Shotgun Bandolier/Sling w/Swivels Tan comes with a pair of 1″ sling swivels, providing basic attachment options. There are no other included accessories, and customization options are limited. The tan color is the only available color option.
While the bandolier itself is not readily customizable, the sling can be replaced with a higher-quality aftermarket option if desired. The bandolier section is compatible with most standard 2″ and 3″ shotgun shells.
The 1″ sling swivels are a common size, making it relatively easy to find replacements or upgrades from other brands. However, the overall design is not intended for extensive customization.
