Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder Shotgun 5 Rounds Black Elastic Review

The Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder Shotgun 5 Rounds Black Elastic Made a Bold First Impression

The Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder Shotgun 5 Rounds Black Elastic is a deceptively simple accessory promising convenient access to extra shotgun shells. Manufactured by Hunters Specialties, it’s essentially an elastic sleeve designed to slip over your shotgun’s buttstock, providing storage for five additional shells. This product appealed to me due to its promise of streamlining my hunting setup and eliminating the need for bulky vests or pouches.

I’ve always valued lightweight and efficient gear, but fumbling for shells in a critical moment can be the difference between bagging a bird and going home empty-handed. Previously, I’d used a belt-mounted shell pouch, but it often felt cumbersome and shifted around during active hunts. I also looked at velcro-attached side saddles, but wanted something easily removable and less permanent. The Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder seemed like the ideal compromise.

My initial impression upon receiving the Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder was one of understated simplicity. The black elastic material felt robust, although thin, and the stitching appeared durable enough for regular use. It felt smaller than anticipated, which made me wonder about the ease of loading and extracting shells, but overall, the build quality appeared decent, especially considering the price. It was a pleasant surprise considering the very low cost.

Real-World Testing: Putting Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder Shotgun 5 Rounds Black Elastic to the Test

First Use Experience

I tested the Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder during a dove hunt in the Texas brush country. The weather was warm and dry, and I spent several hours walking through fields, occasionally taking shots at passing doves. Attaching the shell holder to my Remington 870’s synthetic stock was straightforward. It slid on snugly, remaining secure throughout the hunt without shifting or slipping.

Initially, loading and unloading shells was a bit of a struggle, as the elastic was very tight. The user feedback I saw seemed accurate. However, after a few repetitions, the elastic loosened up slightly, making the process smoother. While hunting, having the shells readily accessible on the buttstock proved incredibly convenient and sped up my reloading time considerably. There was a comforting feeling in that readily available ammo.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of regular use, primarily during upland bird and waterfowl seasons, the Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder has held up reasonably well. There are some slight signs of wear around the stitching where the elastic loops attach to the main sleeve, but nothing significant enough to compromise its functionality. It’s become a staple in my hunting gear.

Cleaning is minimal; a quick wipe down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and debris. Compared to my previous shell pouch, this buttstock holder is far easier to maintain and store. While it’s not the most robust piece of gear I own, it certainly outperforms my expectations given its low price point, providing convenient and reliable service. The elastic has relaxed a bit to where the shells load and unload easier, but remain very secure.

Breaking Down the Features of Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder Shotgun 5 Rounds Black Elastic

Specifications

• Material: The Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder is constructed from durable black elastic. This allows it to stretch and conform to different buttstock sizes, while providing a secure grip on the shells.
• Capacity: It holds five shotgun shells of various gauges. This provides quick access to additional ammunition without adding significant bulk.
• Design: The elastic sleeve design allows for easy installation and removal. This makes it a versatile accessory for different shotguns.
• Weight: The lightweight elastic adds virtually no noticeable weight to the shotgun. This is essential for maintaining balance and maneuverability during hunts.
• Color: The black color blends in well with most shotgun stocks and hunting gear. This reduces visibility and helps maintain a low profile.

These specifications directly influence the practicality of the shell holder in real-world scenarios. The elastic material ensures a snug fit, while the five-shell capacity strikes a good balance between convenience and bulk. The low weight is crucial for maintaining the shotgun’s handling characteristics, and the black color aids in concealment. This shell holder is very practical.

Performance & Functionality

The Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder performs its intended function admirably by providing quick and easy access to extra shotgun shells. It excels in situations where rapid reloading is necessary, such as hunting fast-moving game or engaging in target shooting. Shell retention is secure, preventing shells from accidentally falling out, even during rigorous activity.

However, the initial tightness of the elastic can make loading and unloading shells a bit challenging. With extended use, the elastic loosens slightly, but it can still require some effort, particularly with larger gauge shells. Despite this, the overall performance is reliable and significantly improves reloading speed and efficiency. It is an improvement over other options I’ve tested.

Design & Ergonomics

The Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder’s simple elastic sleeve design is both functional and unobtrusive. The low profile ensures it doesn’t interfere with shouldering or aiming the shotgun. It adds minimal bulk to the buttstock, maintaining the weapon’s overall balance and ergonomics.

The elastic material is comfortable against the cheek and doesn’t cause any discomfort during prolonged use. While the design is basic, it is effective and easy to use, requiring no special tools or modifications for installation. It is well-designed and effective.

Durability & Maintenance

Given its simple construction, the Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder is reasonably durable. The elastic material can withstand regular use and exposure to the elements, although it may eventually stretch out or wear down over time. The stitching appears to be the weakest point.

Maintenance is straightforward, requiring only occasional cleaning to remove dirt and debris. With proper care, the shell holder should provide several seasons of reliable service. Its low cost also means that replacement is an affordable option if it eventually wears out.

Accessories and Customization Options

The Hunters Specialties Buttstock Shell Holder is a standalone accessory with no included accessories or direct customization options. However, it can be used in conjunction with other accessories, such as cheek risers or recoil pads, as long as they don’t interfere with the shell holder’s placement. The focus here is simplicity.

Its compatibility with various shotgun models and gauges makes it a versatile addition to any shotgun owner’s gear. While it doesn’t offer extensive customization, its simplicity and compatibility are significant advantages.
