The OTIS SPORTSMANS MAT Made a Bold First Impression
In the often-overlooked world of firearm maintenance, having the right tools isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity. Enter the OTIS SPORTSMANS MAT, a seemingly simple accessory that promises to elevate your cleaning and gunsmithing experience. Manufactured by Otis Technology, this 35.25″ x 17.75″ mat is designed to provide a dedicated and protective surface for all your bench cleaning needs. At a modest price of $16.49, it begs the question: can such an affordable item truly make a difference?
My journey to acquire the OTIS SPORTSMANS MAT stemmed from a growing frustration with using makeshift surfaces. I was tired of using old towels and cardboard boxes that offered inadequate protection and limited space. I needed a dedicated space to clean and maintain my firearms without worrying about damaging my workbench or the firearms themselves.
Unboxing the OTIS SPORTSMANS MAT, my initial impression was one of practical simplicity. The mat is lightweight and flexible, constructed from what appears to be a durable, non-marring material. The size, at roughly 35″ by 18″, seemed adequate for most of my pistols and even some smaller rifles.
I considered other options, like the more expensive and larger Tekmat gun cleaning mats, which are known for their exploded diagrams and detailed instructions. I also briefly looked at some DIY options, but the time and effort involved didn’t seem worth it for a simple cleaning mat. I ultimately chose the OTIS SPORTSMANS MAT for its compact size, affordability, and the reputation of Otis Technology.
My first impression was positive, but not overwhelmingly enthusiastic. It’s a mat; it’s not going to blow you away with features. However, the build quality seemed solid, and the size appeared practical. I was eager to see how it would perform in real-world conditions.
Real-World Testing: Putting **OTIS SPORTSMANS MAT** to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the OTIS SPORTSMANS MAT during a post-range cleaning session with my Glock 19. I set it up on my workbench and proceeded to disassemble and clean the pistol using various solvents and brushes.
The mat performed admirably, providing a stable and non-slip surface. Spilled solvent was easily wiped away, and the mat’s texture prevented small parts from rolling off the edge.
The only minor issue was the size; while adequate for a pistol, it felt a little cramped when working with larger items like an AR-15 bolt carrier group.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the OTIS SPORTSMANS MAT has held up remarkably well. There are no signs of significant wear and tear, despite being exposed to various solvents, oils, and abrasive cleaning tools.
Cleaning the mat is incredibly simple. A quick wipe with a damp cloth or a bit of soapy water is usually all it takes to remove any residue.
Compared to my previous makeshift cleaning surfaces, the OTIS SPORTSMANS MAT is a significant improvement. It provides a dedicated, protective, and easy-to-clean workspace, making firearm maintenance a much more enjoyable and efficient process.
