The AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45 Made a Bold First Impression
Cleaning firearms, especially after a long day at the range or a challenging hunt, is a necessary evil. I’ve relied on countless cleaning kits over the past decade, some good, some… not so much. Enter the AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45, a compact and seemingly efficient solution promising to streamline the tedious chore of firearm maintenance. It piqued my interest with its promise of speed and convenience.
Years of experience have taught me that effective firearm cleaning is paramount for maintaining accuracy and reliability. My usual routine involves a multi-step process with various brushes, jags, and patches, often consuming more time than I’d prefer. I needed a solution that was faster and more efficient without compromising the thoroughness of the cleaning.
Upon receiving the AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45, my initial impression was one of neat efficiency. The blister pack contains the Speed Brush, Speed Jag, and a small assortment of patches, all appearing well-organized. Compared to bulkier cleaning kits, its compact size immediately stood out. I’ve used bore snakes and other all-in-one solutions before, but they often lack the aggressive cleaning power needed for heavily fouled barrels. This AVID set looked like it might offer a good balance of speed and effectiveness.
I had been considering the Otis Technology Ripcord and the Hoppe’s BoreSnake as quicker cleaning alternatives. I ultimately chose the AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45 because it appeared to offer a more robust brushing action and a dedicated jag for patch application. I was hoping for a more thorough cleaning experience than a simple pull-through system.
My first impression was cautiously optimistic. The components felt sturdy enough for light to moderate use, but I reserved judgment until I could put the kit through its paces. I was excited to see if it could truly deliver on its promise of speed without sacrificing cleaning quality.
Real-World Testing: Putting AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45 to the Test
First Use Experience
I took the AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45 to my local shooting range after a long session with my 1911. I had put about 200 rounds of .45 ACP through it. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to test the kit’s speed and cleaning effectiveness. The range environment was fairly typical, with moderate temperatures and minimal dust.
The AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45 performed adequately during its first use. The Speed Brush effectively loosened carbon fouling in the barrel, while the Speed Jag facilitated patch application. I found the process relatively straightforward. However, I did notice that the patches provided were quite small, requiring several passes to achieve complete coverage of the bore.
Using the AVID kit required minimal learning. The brush and jag attached easily to my standard cleaning rod. After the first use, I didn’t encounter any major issues, although I wished the brush bristles were a little stiffer.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45 has proven to be a decent, though not exceptional, cleaning tool. I’ve used it after every range session, cleaning a variety of .45 caliber firearms. The AVID set has become a regular part of my maintenance routine.
The durability of the AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45 is acceptable for its price point. The nickel-plated bristles on the brush have shown minimal signs of wear. The Speed Jag remains intact. However, I anticipate needing to replace the brush sooner rather than later if I continue to use it regularly.
Cleaning the AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45 itself is straightforward. I simply wipe down the brush and jag with a solvent-soaked cloth. Maintaining the set is easy.
Compared to my previous experiences with dedicated brushes and jags, the AVID SPEED CLEAN UPGRADE SET .45 offers a slightly faster cleaning process. However, the cleaning power is not significantly better than using standard tools. The AVID set provides a convenient, all-in-one solution for quick cleanings.
