Rise Armament 22 ARC 18″BBL 1-7 Twist Complete Upper Dark Gray Review

The Rise Armament 22 ARC 18″BBL 1-7 Twist Complete Upper Dark Gray Made a Bold First Impression

The Rise Armament 22 ARC 18″BBL 1-7 Twist Complete Upper Dark Gray isn’t just another AR-15 upper; it’s a statement. Manufactured by Rise Armament, this complete upper receiver promises exceptional accuracy and a modern aesthetic, chambered in the relatively new and exciting 22 ARC cartridge. The fluted barrel, free-floating handguard, and ambidextrous charging handle immediately scream quality and thoughtful design.

I’ve been searching for a versatile upper receiver that could handle both long-range target shooting and potentially some varmint hunting. The 22 ARC cartridge intrigued me with its potential for flat trajectory and decent energy out to several hundred yards. I was particularly drawn to Rise Armament’s reputation for precision components.

The upper arrived well-packaged, and the first thing I noticed was the sleek dark gray Cerakote finish. The fluted barrel looked fantastic, and the handguard felt incredibly solid in my hand. It definitely felt like a step up from the mil-spec uppers I was used to.

I considered a similar upper from Bravo Company Manufacturing (BCM), known for their reliability, and another from Aero Precision, a brand often praised for value. However, the Rise Armament offering seemed to strike a balance between premium features and a competitive price, especially with the included ambidextrous charging handle and complete BCG. I chose the Rise Armament 22 ARC 18″BBL 1-7 Twist Complete Upper Dark Gray for its blend of precision, features, and the allure of the 22 ARC cartridge.

My initial impression was one of excitement. The fit and finish were excellent, and the components felt high-quality. It felt like I was holding a serious piece of equipment ready to deliver exceptional performance.

Real-World Testing: Putting Rise Armament 22 ARC 18″BBL 1-7 Twist Complete Upper Dark Gray to the Test

First Use Experience

My first outing with the Rise Armament 22 ARC 18″BBL 1-7 Twist Complete Upper Dark Gray was at my local outdoor shooting range. The weather was clear and sunny, providing ideal conditions for sighting in and getting a feel for the new upper. I mounted the upper on a mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver and topped it with a Vortex Viper PST Gen II 3-15×44 scope.

The initial setup was straightforward. I immediately appreciated the ambidextrous charging handle, which made manipulating the bolt much easier. After zeroing the scope at 100 yards, I started experimenting with different ammunition.

The upper performed remarkably well, even with factory loads. The rifle-length gas system contributed to a smooth recoil impulse, and the trigger pull was crisp and consistent. There were no malfunctions of any kind during the first 100 rounds.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of use, the Rise Armament 22 ARC 18″BBL 1-7 Twist Complete Upper Dark Gray has proven to be exceptionally reliable. I have put several hundred rounds through it, and I have only had one failure to extract, which was likely due to a slightly over-pressured handload. The upper consistently delivers sub-MOA accuracy with my preferred handloads.

The dark gray Cerakote finish has held up well. Despite some minor scratches from handling, there are no signs of significant wear. The upper is relatively easy to clean and maintain. A quick wipe-down after each range session and a more thorough cleaning every few hundred rounds keeps it running smoothly.

Compared to my previous experiences with mil-spec uppers, the Rise Armament upper is a significant upgrade. The accuracy, reliability, and overall quality are noticeably superior. It has exceeded my expectations and has become my go-to upper for precision shooting.

Breaking Down the Features of Rise Armament 22 ARC 18″BBL 1-7 Twist Complete Upper Dark Gray

Specifications

• Caliber: 22 ARC. This cartridge offers a flat trajectory and good energy retention at longer distances, making it ideal for target shooting and varmint hunting.
• Barrel Length: 18 inches. The longer barrel provides increased velocity and improved accuracy, contributing to better long-range performance.
• Barrel Twist: 1:7. This twist rate is optimized for stabilizing heavier bullets, which are typically preferred for long-range shooting with the 22 ARC.
• Barrel: 416R Stainless Steel, fluted, button-rifled, air-gauged, and tested. The stainless steel construction provides excellent corrosion resistance and accuracy, while the fluting reduces weight and improves heat dissipation.
• Gas System: Rifle-length. The rifle-length gas system provides a smoother recoil impulse and reduces wear on the components compared to shorter gas systems.
• Handguard: Free-floating skeletonized aluminum with continuous 12 o’clock Picatinny rail, MLOK slots, four threaded steel sling swivel QD inserts, a snag-free front, and patent-pending attachment lock. The free-floating design enhances accuracy by preventing pressure on the barrel, while the MLOK slots and Picatinny rail provide ample space for accessories.
• Charging Handle: RISE ambidextrous charging handle. This allows for easy manipulation of the bolt by both right- and left-handed shooters, even with optics and gloves.
• Bolt Carrier Group: Premium BCG with 9310 bolt, individually MPI tested, staked gas key, durable black nitride finish. The high-quality BCG ensures reliable cycling and durability, while the black nitride finish provides excellent corrosion resistance.
• Receiver: Forged billet aluminum. Forged aluminum is a stronger and more durable material than cast aluminum, providing a solid foundation for the upper receiver.
• Barrel Thread Pitch: ½”x28. This is a standard thread pitch for .22 caliber barrels, allowing for compatibility with a wide variety of muzzle devices.
• Handguard Length: 15.25”. This provides ample space for mounting accessories and offers a comfortable grip.
