Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit Review

The Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit Made a Bold First Impression

The Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit promises a comprehensive cleaning solution for a variety of firearms. Outers, a name known for affordable shooting accessories, aims to provide a versatile package in this kit. My initial reaction upon seeing the price tag of $13.49 was skepticism mixed with intrigue.

For years, I’ve relied on a hodgepodge of individual cleaning tools accumulated over countless range trips and hunts. This kit aimed to consolidate those loose components into a manageable and portable solution. The promise of “universal” compatibility and the sheer number of pieces included raised my expectations.

Upon unboxing, the kit felt surprisingly complete for the price. The brass rods felt solid enough, and the assortment of brushes and jags covered a decent range of calibers. I compared it mentally to a similar kit from Hoppe’s I saw at a local sporting goods store for almost twice the price, and a more specialized bore snake I have for my shotgun. This Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit seemed like a broader, albeit potentially less refined, solution. My initial excitement was tempered by a slight concern about the overall quality of the individual components, but the completeness of the package was undeniably appealing.

Real-World Testing: Putting Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit to the Test

First Use Experience

The first test for the Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit came after a day at the range with my AR-15 and 9mm pistol. The dusty conditions of the outdoor range provided a perfect opportunity to assess the kit’s cleaning capabilities. I used the appropriate bronze brushes and cleaning jags for each firearm.

Using the kit was straightforward. The brass rods screwed together easily, and the attachments were simple to install. After several passes with a brush, I applied solvent using a patch wrapped around the jag, and then cleaned it again. The AR-15’s bore cleaned up nicely, removing most of the carbon fouling. However, I noticed some black residue left on the cleaning patches from the 9mm, suggesting the bore brush alone wasn’t completely removing all the stubborn powder residue.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of using the Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit on various firearms, including a .22 rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun (using a separate adapter, of course!), the kit has held up surprisingly well, especially considering the price point. There are signs of wear on the bronze brushes, as expected. The jags are doing okay, though one of the patch loops has started to slightly bend after repeated use.

Maintaining the kit itself is simple. A quick wipe-down of the rods and attachments with a clean cloth after each use prevents buildup. Compared to my previous assortment of mismatched cleaning tools, this kit has made the cleaning process more organized and convenient. While it might not outperform dedicated, high-end cleaning kits, it provides adequate performance for the average shooter and hunter on a budget.

Breaking Down the Features of Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit

Specifications

The Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit includes the following components:

• 3 solid brass rods: These rods connect to form a cleaning rod of adequate length for most rifles and shotguns.
• 5 bronze brushes: These brushes are designed to scrub the bore and remove fouling. They come in varying sizes to accommodate different calibers.
• 6 cleaning jags: These jags are designed to hold cleaning patches and push them through the bore. They are also various sizes.
• 2 patch loops: These loops are an alternative to the jags and are used to hold cleaning patches.
• 1 adapter: This adapter allows for the use of brushes and jags with different thread sizes.
• 1 gun cloth: This cloth is for wiping down the exterior of your firearm.
• 50 patches: These patches are used with the jags or loops to clean the bore.

The inclusion of multiple brush and jag sizes makes this a versatile kit for various firearms. The solid brass rods offer decent durability. The quantity of the included patches is adequate to get started, but more would have been welcome.

Performance & Functionality

The Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit performs its intended job adequately. It cleans firearms to a satisfactory level, removing most fouling and residue. The kit is easy to use, and the included components are compatible with a variety of firearms.

The strengths of this kit lie in its versatility and affordability. Its main weakness is the overall quality of some of the components. The patch loops, in particular, could be more durable. For the price, however, it meets expectations as a basic, all-in-one cleaning solution.

Design & Ergonomics

The kit’s design is simple and functional. The components are lightweight and easy to handle. There is no carrying case included, which could be a drawback for some users.

There is no significant learning curve associated with using this kit. Anyone familiar with firearm cleaning will be able to use it effectively.

Durability & Maintenance

The kit’s durability is acceptable for its price point. The brass rods should last a long time with proper care. The brushes and jags will eventually wear out, especially with frequent use.

Maintenance is simple. Cleaning the rods and attachments after each use will prolong their lifespan. Replacement brushes and jags can be purchased separately as needed.

Accessories and Customization Options

The Outers 19 Piece Universal Cleaning Kit comes with a basic set of accessories, including brushes, jags, patch loops, an adapter, a gun cloth, and patches. There are no customization options available for the kit itself. However, users can purchase additional brushes and jags in different sizes or materials.

The kit is compatible with most standard-sized brushes and jags from other brands. This allows for some degree of customization and upgradeability.
